Phonics
Hello there! One of the most important things that all children need to learn is how to read. Some children are lucky, and for those individuals reading comes as naturally as speaking. For other children, however, learning to read is a daunting, insurmountable challenge. That's where I come in. Learning to read is a very personal and unique experience. I can help a child go from barely knowing her alphabet to learning how to put sounds together to make words. And from there, I can teach her how those words form sentences, and how the sentences make stories! And it all begins with phonics.
I think phonics are essential for children who struggle with reading. By combining sounds, reference words, and pictures, I can help your child build a "backpack" of knowledge that will help her be an independent reader. I use a number of techniques, including "sound" flashcards that we create together, written activities, games, puzzles, sight words, rhymes, and of course, real literature. I will teach your child strategies for reading--not just decoding words, but other ways for figuring out what a word might be. I celebrate success and am constantly working to help your child learn more than what she ever thought was possible. On top of everything else, I pair phonics with comprehension, because, let's face it. What's the point of reading if you don't understand what you've read? Best of all, we have fun during our sessions! If you have a reluctant or struggling reader, don't hesitate to contact me. I'm here to help you!
Special Needs
Just like the world is filled with a wide variety of colors that make it the beautiful place it is, human beings come in a variety of packages. Because there are so many different kinds of people, there are bound to be all kinds of learning differences within those people. Dealing with those learning differences can certainly be tricky, especially if you're expected to learn things just like everyone else. If you or your child is a person with learning differences, I may be someone who can help you!
I've been working with children for a very long time, and in my experience I have worked with all kinds of special needs. From ADD, ADHD, ODD, OCD, autism, PDD, Asberger's Syndrome, dyslexia, fetal alcohol syndrome, non-specified learning disability, visual/auditory processing, and emotional disorders to highly gifted children, I have helped numerous families with children who have special needs. I believe that all children can learn, no matter what their difficulties may be,and I am more than willing to go above and beyond to help your child succeed. I use a variety of techniques, all individually based. Everything from tactile tools, technology, and games to note taking and study skills are taught to help your child succeed and survive during his/her academic journey. Please contact me if you have a child with special needs. I'm here to help you.
