Hi there!
Since I was seven years old, I knew that I wanted to dedicate my life to teaching. I possess an enthusiasm and passion for learning, and I'd love to share that enthusiasm with you!
I've been working as a private tutor for over ten years, so I have lots of experience in all subject areas. I've worked with all kinds of people, from very young children just learning their letters to adults in their 50s looking for a new career. I specialize in individually based instruction that is formulated around my students' needs. This means that no matter what your learning style is or what difficulties you have, I will find a way to help you learn!
Over the years, I've been fortunate enough to work with families who have many different needs. I understand how frustrating school and learning can be. I want to help alleviate that frustration by building on your strengths, while working on your areas of need. I consider myself to be fairly tenacious. I truly believe that everyone can learn! I will do everything I can, even if it means trying a plethora of different techniques, to help you find what works best for you.
I use a combination of tools to help my students, from games to technology to manipulatives. I will supply you with an array of learning aids that will help you in whichever area you're struggling. I am very flexible because I understand how crazy life can be. I will do my very best to make our schedules work together.
As far as what I teach, as I've said I have taught pretty much everything. In the elementary grades, I teach reading from the ground up, working on phonics, word recognition, reading strategies, and comprehension. As children grow, their approach to reading should change, so I provide suggestions for older children who are struggling as well. Because reading is so very important, my main priority is to help children develop a love of reading. After all, books can take us anywhere we want to go!
Because I'm a fellow of the Pennsylvania Writing and Literature Project, literacy is something that is near and dear to my heart. Speaking of literacy, we can't forget about writing! I love to write, and I help my students enjoy it too. Whether it be story writing, speech writing, essays, poetry, or research, I feel it's important to develop strong writing abilities. My approach to writing includes understanding grammar and conventions, as well as guiding my students to improving their writing and developing their personal voice.
In the area of math, I teach all concepts of math for the elementary grades, and I absolutely love it! If you are someone who is afraid of fractions or numbers just don't make any sense at all, you definitely want to work with me! I was a struggling math student as a youngster, but now math is an all-time favorite subject of mine to teach!
In addition to these subjects, I also teach many different skills, including organization, listening comprehension, note taking, studying, and strategies for dealing with disorders or learning differences. Not only that, but I am big on building self esteem. Encouragement is a must for a learner!
With the older grades, I continue to address note taking, study, and organizational skills. I teach how to use technology to better help a student succeed. I provide tools and instruction in every subject area, including language arts, geometry, pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, trigonometry, social studies, science, and Spanish. I can provide guidance for older students who are applying to private high schools by preparing for the SSAT or ISSE and aiding with the essay writing process. I can provide support with the college application/SAT/ACT process as well. My main goal is to help reduce the stress of both middle and high school, which are crucial transitional times in a young person's life. I try to provide quality instruction while also being a good role model.
Aside from academics, I have also worked with individuals who possess a variety of learning needs. I have experience with children who have ADD, ADHD, ODD, OCD, Non-specified learning disorder, dyslexia, PDD, autism, Asberger's Syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, emotional disorder, hearing and visually impaired, and visual and auditory processing issues. When a child struggles with a learning difference, life alone can be challenging. Add school into the mix, and learning can be a nightmare. Regardless of your needs, I can help you be successful. I can help you understand. I can help you learn!
If you haven't yet been able to tell, I am quite passionate about what I do. Teaching is such an amazing job, and I hope you'll allow me to help you!
