Semi-retired former industry executive, college professor and middle/high school teacher is willing to provide tutoring services in areas relating to primarily to Language Arts. I am also willing to assist as far as career counseling for clients who might be undecided as far as college majors or careers. One of my specialties (particularly online) has been Enrichment in Language Arts and AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature for students age 11 and older, as well as SAT, SSAT and ACT preparation for students age 11 and older! I am also certified by Wyzant to tutor in American History.

I have had extensive tutoring experience earlier in my career, and, of course, as needed for college students. I currently serve at the Career Services representative for HACC-Lebanon Campus, and have extensive experience in working with young people trying to determine a college major or a career choice.

In addition, my undergraduate major was English, for which I was certified as a secondary teacher. I taught English for two years prior to attending law school, and still often assist high school students with essays, etc. In addition, I enhanced my career by serving as a a middle and high school Language Arts teacher in a private school.

I did serve as a reader/grader for the SAT Writing samples a few years ago, so I am also able to provide assistance to students to feel they might struggle with that SAT component.

A number of homeschool parents have asked me to develop and deliver classes in Amerian and British Literature for their children. These classes incldue vocabulary, writing and grammar/structure (if needed) components.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

Academically, my graduate law degree (LL.M) is in corporate law and taxation. My doctorate focused on organizational culture. I also taught business administration for 10 years at Penn College, Williamsport, PA, teaching well over 1,000 students over that time period. I also have published numerous papers on management.

Vocationally, I served as in-house counsel and middle-to-senior management in financial institutions for almost 20 years. You do not rise to those positions without developing an understanding of business.

Career Development

While serving as Professor of Business Administration at Penn College, I also supervised the internship program, placing and supervising about 200 interns over that time period. That experience allowed me to transition in my semi-retirement to becoming the Career Services representative at HACC-Lebanon Campus.

In my role, I provide workshops in areas such as Resumes, Cover Letters, Interviewing Skills, and using inventories to learn more about your personality and career fit. I also meet individually with students, primarily in the areas of internships and career shadowing, career planning, review of resumes, and conducting mock interviews.

Classics

The classics, while categorized under history, is actually more related to literature. I possess a doctorate, thirty-five years of teaching experience, and have taught English is grades 8-12. focusing on having students read and understand classics, whether they be Beowulf, Great Expectations, or even Greek mythology. I am also a certified teacher.

English

I have served as the English Language Arts instructor for a private Christian school in Lebanon, having taught middle and high school classes. I was a former SAT writing reader, and am proficient at teaching literature, writing, vocabulary and grammar.

ISEE

I tutor quite a few gifted students in both SSAT and ISEE. Many of the students have parents desiring that they pursue boarding schools. Now I do not tutor math, only English. I possess four degrees, including a doctorate, and have taught for decades, including often for WyzAnt. My students range in age from 11 to college-age. I was a Language Arts teacher, teach and tutor frequently in SAT and ACT, and am well-suited to tutor ISEE prep.

Praxis

I am a certified teacher and possess a doctorate in education. I have been tutoring in the Praxis Reading and Writing sections. Although you do not have a qualifying Praxis test in those areas, I can say that I seldom miss more than one or two questions when taking any practice exam in those areas. My bachelor's degree is in English and, in addition to the doctorate, I possess two law degrees. I have been a college professor and MS/HS English teacher for over 30 years.

Public Speaking

I have taught public speaking in college and in high school. Also, as an attorney, I have had classes in that subject area. Plus, I have presented papers at numerous conferences and taught for over 20 years.

SAT Reading

I have taught SAT Reading and Writing preparation as part of my Language Arts teaching at a private Christian school, and also am teaching an AP English class.

SAT Writing

I began tutoring SAT Writing while teaching Language Arts at a private school. I am currently tutoring numerous students in this area, and have been certified by a number of agencies. I am a retired college professor and have been published quite a bit. Tutoring SAT writing involves understanding how to plan and organize the essay. I drill on those aspects, and students seem to appreciate my efforts. They tell me I have added quite a few points to their SAT scores.

Study Skills

I served as an advisor for college students for 10 years as a FT professor. I also was certified to teach, and did teach extensively, the Human Development (developmental) class for incoming community college freshmen who were deemed at risk. That included the study skills component. In addition, I served on the Student Support Team for MS/HS students in the private school I taught at. Study skills were a significant intervention that we made use of.

Vocabulary

As part of my Language Arts teaching at New Covenant Christian School, I do include a vocabulary component weekly. Words are selected based upon grade level. Generally, I focus on words the student might encounter on standardized tests.

Writing

I have published a number of articles and also am teaching writing at a private school. I am very adept at grammar and usage!
