Writing, composition, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and reading skills make up my primary areas of strength as a tutor. Given the fact that I have worked with students at the middle and high school levels (grades 6-12) for over 40 years in just two venues, one public and one independent school, I know that I am most successful at working with students in this age range. Study skills related to reading and writing and test taking situations are also areas of strength. While specifics skills related to languages, math and upper level sciences are not areas of strength, general study and homework skills and techniques are.
I have always worked with students as a co-learner, placing myself alongside the student--expectant, respectful, patient, positive, willing to help, and flexible, not as a judge or authority. I honor and respect the uniqueness of each student, have learned over the years to recognize different learning styles (through both experience and professional training beyond my college degrees), like to use humor, and prefer a relaxed friendly working atmosphere. Raising my own family of three sons and one daughter has taught me much about how young people process homework assignments outside the classroom.
I love to sing and have been involved in choral singing since high school; I currently sing in a community choral group. While not a true gear-head, I've always been interested in antique automobiles. For the past 15 years I have been volunteering with an organization which maintains and operates a collection of Stanley Steam Cars. Although I have traveled within the US and abroad to England, Singapore, Thailand, Bali, and India, I have been a life long-resident of the Southern Chester County, Northern Delaware area.
