Mathematics is often so confusing--and so boring. But it doesn't have to be that way! The problem is that most people were just told what to do, but never told why. Math is not some mysterious subject that only a few can comprehend. It's just another element of knowledge in general: as with any area, practice makes perfect, but that practice needs to be guided by an expert. No one gains mastery in any subject without guidance. I can help you unlock the mystery of mathematics and get you on the road to comprehension.

I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a master's degree in Secondary Education. My college education covers mathematics courses all the way through Abstract Algebra, Modern Geometry, Number Theory, and Differential Equations. Over my career I have taught middle school and high school students in Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Advanced Math, and Calculus. I truly enjoy mathematics and have read multiple books on math history. Because of America's issues with mathematics, I am zealous about making sure that students have a strong foundation in math so that they are prepared for adulthood.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have a Master's Degree in Secondary Education, and I am certified in Pennsylvania and Virginia in Mathematics 7-12 and Mathematics 6-8. This includes Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Analysis, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 at both the middle school and high school levels. I have a Master's Degree in Secondary Education, and I am certified in Pennsylvania and Virginia in Mathematics 7-12 and Mathematics 6-8.

Algebra 2

I have a Master's Degree in Secondary Education and a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics. Algebra 2 is one of my favorite math subjects, and I've had the opportunity to teach it twice. I am certified in Pennsylvania and Virginia in Mathematics 7-12 and Mathematics 6-8.

Basketball

I have experience playing and coaching basketball at the middle and high school levels. In 1996-97, I coached the JV team at Mt. Calvary Christian school. In addition, I am an avid NBA fan who studies in depth the history and details of basketball.
I can help with fundamentals, particularly those used by power forwards and centers: posting up, getting position, low post moves, passing, boxing out, rebounding, position defense, setting picks, etc.

Calculus

Calculus is my favorite discipline in mathematics, and I love teaching it! I have a B.S. in Mathematics, and I have taught calculus in a high school setting. In addition, I have tutored multiple clients in calculus over the past few years.

Elementary Math

Over my years as an educator, I've seen a lot of students fall behind in math during their middle school years because they didn't have the necessary foundations in elementary school. The basics are essential: arithmetic, organization, and following procedure. These are what I focus on when I tutor an elementary student.

Geography

I have a Master's Degree in Secondary Education, and I am certified in Virginia in Social Studies 6-8. Geography is one of my fascinations--a hobby of sorts. I thoroughly enjoy studying maps and investigating the links between geography and history.

Geometry

Geometry is one of my favorite subjects to teach because of its implications. It's a very logical subject, and mastering geometry can help a student think in a more structured manner, and be able to present argument more effectively. I have a Master's Degree in Secondary Education, and I am certified in Pennsylvania and Virginia in Mathematics 7-12 and Mathematics 6-8.

Prealgebra

I have a Master's Degree in Secondary Education, and I am certified in Pennsylvania and Virginia in Mathematics 7-12 and Mathematics 6-8. I have actually taught this subject more than any other. In fact, I have taught this at the high school level. A strong foundation in algebra is critical for any student to succeed in high school mathematics.

Precalculus

Calculus is my favorite area of mathematics, so I feel it's essential for a student to have the fundamental tools ready when that course begins. I have taught both Precalculus and Calculus, and am certified to teach mathematics at the high school level (PA and VA certification).

PSAT

In addition to being state certified in both middle school and high school mathematics, I possess a broad knowledge of reading and writing techniques. English is one of my favorite subjects, and I am an aficionado of grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules. In addition, I am an excellent test-taker, and can teach the necessary test-taking skills for navigating the PSAT.

Religion

My specialty is the Judeo-Christian religious denominations. I am a member of local Christian church, and I have also attended Bob Jones University and Liberty University. I have taken multiple courses on the Judeo-Christian religion, and continue to do so today. Currently, I am working through the BILD (Biblical Institute of Leadership Development) curriculum. Over the course of the last 20 years, I have taught Bible courses at the church level to the following age groups: elementary, middle school, high school, and adult.

SAT Math

I have a Master's Degree in Secondary Education, and I am certified in Pennsylvania and Virginia in Mathematics 7-12 and Mathematics 6-8. This includes all the mathematics topics covered on the SAT. I have taught algebra and precalculus subject matter, but more importantly, I have excellent test-taking skills. I feel I am well-equipped to assist in preparation for the SAT.

Social Studies

I am certified in Social Studies 6-8 in Virginia, and I will be taking the Content Knowledge Praxis test. My minor as an undergraduate was History, and I took graduate classes on teaching the social sciences.

Trigonometry

Over the course of my teaching experience, I have had the opportunity to teach Precalculus and Calculus, meaning that I have worked extensively with trigonometry. My undergraduate degree is in mathematics, and I am state certified to teach high school mathematics.
