I have had experience tutoring both young children and young adults in both the private and public sector. I spent a complete school year teaching two elementary students, one in grade 5 and one in grade 2. I lived in their home in the Philippines and taught them all subjects of an American curriculum. I have also tutored kids in a public school setting. I taught at South Ward Elementary School in Longview, Texas. My job was to tutor kids in kindergarten who needed to learn English number recognition and placement, and to work with children in 5th grade who needed individual help to master math and reading skills. I recently graduated from LeTourneau University with a bachelor’s degree in History and Political Science. During my time there I developed my composition and research skills, and tutored college exchange students to help them develop these skills.
I enjoy teaching anyone regardless of his or her age and level of education. I believe that patience and creative presentation are qualities I possess that help me observe a student’s approach to learning and give him/her an understanding of how to complete a task. I have found that oftentimes students’ difficulties can be overcome by working through the problems with them, and being willing to explain ideas in multiple ways until the student can become confident in his or her understanding of the idea. However, I strongly believe that each student must be able to complete his or her own work. While I help students and work through problems with them, I also make sure they will be able to duplicate the work on their own. I have had experience in public presentation, but I prefer to work with students in smaller groups, or one-on-one so that I can give them individualized help.
