I am a certified English and ESL teacher. I have been employed as an SAT and ACT tutor for more than four years, so I know all about the tests, their format, the types of questions to expect, what to and when to skip, and the short-cuts to do well.

Unlike most teachers, I'm a published writer and an expert at spotting grammatical mistakes, a key part of the Writing section. I was a copy editor for many years, editing stories for accuracy and grammar. I continue to write for a local newspaper.

My own curriculum, taken from a variety of test preparation books, teaches students to actively read and know what to expect on reading passages. I will show your child not only what areas to focus on in long or double passages, but how to make correct inferences, determine the main idea and tone. I believe a student should not only know vocabulary, but also rhetorical terms (assertion, substantiate) in order to answer a question successfully.

My curriculum, which includes tips and strategies, focuses only on what appears on the exam. I will not waste your time/ money with material your child already knows. The grammar section follows a certain pattern, and once students recognize the types of errors, their scores will go up dramatically.

With the essay, I have a specific formula that will allow a student to maximize his or her score and still have enough time to revise. I will teach you time-saving test-taking methods and how to write concise and effective responses to exam questions.

I grew up in Ireland and have resided in Bucks County for 14 years.

I have the knowledge and the time to tutor your child, and I want your child to succeed in life. Why not choose me?

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I am certified to teach social studies grades 7-12 in Pennsylsvania. I taught both 7th grade (world cultures) and 8th grade (American history) for a year in the Philadelphia School District, developing plans for both subjects and assessing students on topics covered. I believe students should be able to accurately interpret maps as well as graphics. My other goal for students is to be able to think critically about current events and draw parallels with past historical periods.

Study Skills

I am an experienced certified English and Social Studies teacher. I have taught students how to take effective notes, differentiating between essential and nonessential information. I have also given lessons on how to mentally prepare for a quiz or test. In addition, I teach test prep, which covers reading strategies, effective writing, and dealing with deadlines.

Often students complain about the words they have to learn for the SAT. I get that. Some words such as "ossified" and "treacly" are extremely obscure, but others such as "equivocal" or "ambivalent" they should know  and use. I point out to them that in life, you will be judged by how you speak and how you write. Many of my students second guess themselves or tend to speculate. So I devised the Beth Cof strategy to help students eliminate wrong answers.   There are five possible answer choices on the SAT; four on the ACT. When I work with students on the SAT essay,  many have difficulty coming up with concrete, adequate examples. Many can't get out of the quicksand of vague and directionless ideas.    Instead of ideas, let individuals from history, literature, science, and the modern era be your guides.
