Hello! I am an energetic, engaging teacher who likes to have fun with my students! I believe that lasting learning occurs when a concept is made fun and memorable. Because of this belief, I strive to create unique and challenging learning experiences that relate to a student's interests and goals. I don't believe in cookie-cutter learning, but in personalized instructional techniques. Literacy and language arts are crucial components of a student's education and their value cannot be underestimated; however, that doesn't mean developing proficiency in these areas can't be fun! Additionally, I have both personal and professional experience working with students with ADD/ADHD and am equipped to help these learners both with content knowledge and study skills.

I have a Master's degree in Teaching and a Bachelor's degree in Writing Arts. I completed my student teaching placement in a private school in NJ, where I taught 7th through 9th grade Language Arts. In addition to the general education classes I taught, I taught a 9th grade Honors section as well. I have also been a high school teacher (grades 9-12) for the NICHE homeschool co-op in NJ for five years.

I look forward to the opportunity to assist you and your child in achieving his or her learning goals!

"Meghan will no tutor any longer in PA - got full time job and moved away"

Meghan replied on 2/24/2014

Galina,
I was very up front when we scheduled our first session about the likelihood that I would be unable to continue as your son's tutor; as I stated in that email on January 18, "I do want to be up front with you and let you know, however, that I just received a job offer in Maryland. If the contract comes through, I will likely be moving there mid-February. If you would prefer to connect with a tutor who will be in the area long-term, I totally understand that. If you'd like to begin sessions anyway, I am happy to meet with [your son] on Monday." Since you replied and scheduled a session, I assumed you understood that I likely would not be able to meet more than once or twice. I hope you were able to find another tutor.
Best of luck!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a certified teacher who currently teaches 9th-12th grade English at a home-schooling co-op in NJ. My students study critical reading, writing, grammar, and debate skills. Before moving to PA, I taught 7th through 9th grade English, encompassing the areas of reading, writing and grammar, at a private school in NJ. Prior to that, I worked as a writer for an online publication and an editor for a newswire. I had to have an exceptional grasp of the English language in order to properly do my job. I also spent many years building my public speaking and debate skills, which required proficiency in the English language as well.

Grammar

I am currently teaching 7th through 9th grade grammar. Before taking this position, I worked as a writer for an online publication and an editor for a newswire. I had to have an exceptional grasp of the English language in order to properly do my job.

Literature

I took a wide variety of literature classes during college and graduate school, including World, British and American Literature. I have experience teaching 7th to 9th grade literature as well. Middle school literature focuses primarily on short stories and the literary elements they encompass (tone, setting, etc.). In 9th grade, my students are currently reading Romeo and Juliet. We make the literature fun through a variety of projects that bring what they are learning to life.

Proofreading

I worked for the country's largest newswire, Business Wire, as an editor before becoming a teacher. I helped our member companies write and edit their press releases before releasing them to the public. It was a high-pressure job where proofreading mistakes could cost the company a client and cost the client millions of dollars. As a result, I became an incredibly thorough and proficient proofreader during my time with the company.

Public Speaking

In high school, I was a member of NICHE Mock Trial Team. This activity includes drama, public speaking and debate skills. Students develop a court case and then act it out in competitions with other teams. For instance, NICHE's student attorneys would have to cross examine the opposing team's witnesses just like a lawyer would during a real court case. I was a student lawyer all 3 years that I was on the team.

Now, I coach this same high school mock trial team. My team is ranked in the Top 4 in the state (NJ has over 200 participating schools). The judges of this competition, who are practicing attorneys and judges, rave about my students' outstanding abilities in drama, public speaking and debate skills.

I believe that these experiences certainly qualify me to teach and tutor in the area of public speaking. As an educator, I make numerous presentations a year and can certainly teach this skill to students.

Writing

I studied Writing Arts in college (BA, Rowan University, 2007) and learned to write proficiently in many areas, including but not limited to: writing for business, writing children's books, writing briefs for court cases and writing persuasive arguments. Then, I wrote for an online publication for a year after college, publishing weekly articles about teaching and home-schooling. Now, I teach middle and high school writing on a daily basis.
