Are you or a loved one beginning the school year with a general chemistry course? Traditionally, in college, the first exam occurs during the third week in September, don't wait until then to start studying! The common concepts of dimensional analysis, naming compounds and stoichiometry build on one another. If you are struggling with these concepts, don't risk getting a low grade on the first exam and then having to struggle to bring it up the whole semester!
General chemistry does rely on a knowledge of algebraic techniques, and when these principles are foggy it can make the chemistry material unnecessarily challenging. I have had extensive experience tutoring this subject matter to both high school and college students and can assist in your ability to master the material!
I graduated from Villanova University in Spring 2011 with an M.S. in Chemistry with a concentration in Inorganic Chemistry. I earned my B.S. in Chemistry-Biology from West Chester University in 2008.
I enjoy the scientific process, and while at Villanova I was a tutor both privately and for the athletic department on campus. Most extensively I have tutored the concepts found in General Chemistry 1 and 2.
As a requirement of my degrees, I have had to prepare a variety of posters and presentations, I am well versed in Microsoft office. In addition, I am proficient in algebra.
In my free time I enjoy cooking, and relaxing with my family. I look forward to the opportunity of assisting you to reach your goals. I am currently at Bryn Mawr College pursuing my PhD in chemistry.
I am a vegetarian and as a result I have learned a great many techniques for cooking in this genre. I am also an avid baker, and have mastered the art of baking without eggs.
As a vegetarian with an appetite I have learned to become creative in trying to duplicate meat based recipes that are safe for me to eat. I know how to stir fry, create sauces and gravies, make a variety of grain based dishes, as well as bake breads, cakes, pies and cookies.
I am versed in safe and sanitary kitchen practices, this includes proper preparation and clean up of the work area.
I have tutored in the past at both the college level (at Villanova University) and for school age children. While meeting the needs of a child's educational demand may be different, my past experience relating to a variety of clients will help me succeed with K-6 clients. In addition, the course content for K-6th students is incorporated into the higher learning courses which I have already taught, which gives me confidence that I will be able to answer their questions in an effective manner.
As a graduate student pursuing both my Masters and now my PhD I have been required to present data in front of a variety of audiences. For example, I formatted a poster based on my research and then presented it at American Chemical Society conventions in Philadelphia and Wilmington De. These venues required me to present the information repeatedly to small groups of people, who were professionals in the field I was studying.
Another example of my public speaking skills comes from actual presentations based in powerpoint that I was required to give, again based on my research. This task required me to present and speak in front of larger audiences. Another example of my public speaking skills comes from course requirements which had me actually present a lecture topic to a class. This involved my preparing a lecture based on a topic and presenting the information as a professor would.
As a tutor I have taught study skills. Each student learns in a different way and it is important for them to discover what works best for them. Repetition is often a helpful tool for math and science. Visual and audio tools are also effective, as are flash cards and rewriting notes.
I have had to develop my own study skills in order to excel at my own studies. Based on my own experiences in pursuing my degrees and my past experience tutoring I feel I will be able to help more students discover their own effective study skills.
