Hi! I look forward to being able to help you. I believe that every person will succeed, given the right tools and opportunities. Tutoring is not just about teaching basic skills but about giving encouragement and instilling confidence. I have been able to help elementary, secondary and college students perform well on testing, greatly improve their writing and reading skills, and build on other fundamental skills.
I have substitute taught in grades K-12 and with special needs students, and I have taught religious education classes for students in grades 2, 4, 6 and 11. I have written and edited for a major newspaper and a magazine. I have also worked as a Therapeutic Staff Support person, working one-on-one with children with special emotional and behavioral needs, helping them to become organized and focused for homework assignments and other tasks. I have edited and evaluated students' undergraduate or graduate papers and provided corrections and suggestions for improvement for a better quality paper.
I help students break down an assignment to ensure that they clearly understand what is being asked of them. While we are communicating regarding their work, I have them regularly check to ensure that they are meeting the requirements of the instructor and class.

English can become one of your favorite subjects - really! As the fundamental tool for writing and talking with people, you will be fascinated to see how it affects your everyday thinking and communication. You and I will walk through assignments together, figuring out what the teacher is asking and discussing how you can best respond to the assignment. When you have completed assignments, we will evaluate them for accuracy, making any corrections where necessary. We will continue to work on this until you have developed your own ability to accurately critique your work.
It is amazing to see the way in which people are critiqued by their ability to use language. Grammar is easier than you think! If you learn the fundamentals, you will have these tools all of your life. I teach students the basic rules of grammar that apply whether writing a simple essay or a lengthy paper. The Rules rule - once you learn them, you will rule all of your assignments!
Did you ever work on a job where you fixed something that was broken? Wasn't it great to see it repaired and in better shape? Proofreading is just like that! We look at your work, find the areas where there are holes, extra pieces that are not needed, wrong parts, places that need more glue to hold your ideas together and areas where you may need to follow the instructions better. By the time you step back and look at your proofread quality work, you will be amazed by just how great a repair person you are!
I love to read! . . . and hope that everyone with whom I work develops a love - or at least a tolerance - for reading as well. To learn from reading is to have a chance to avoid a lot of mistakes in life. In working with students, I break down a reading in parts - there is the natural break of chapters and subsections, then the breakdown of ideas and concepts. I have students verbalize and analyze the main ideas and supporting ideas. This gives them ownership and a sense of control with the material.
I like to make spelling fun, using ideas to help make a word's spelling easy to remember. It works! The words are easy to remember not just for a test but years later.
To help students remember what a word means, I have them use it within a sentence pertaining to their life, in addition to spelling the word and providing its definition. Once a word can be identified in a personal context, it becomes much easier to remember.
Writing involves the act of trusting yourself. Many people do not know where to begin. The best place to begin is with your heart - yes, even on a Science project! If you allow your heart to lead you to your greatest area of interest, you will find that it is easier to write about something that matters to you. What if you cannot choose? Look for a unique approach to the subject matter. No one can tell the story like you can. Through questions and discussion, I will help you get to what matters most to you. Then, we will discuss what approach works best for you - sitting down and writing at length or doing snippets at a time. I will evaluate your work and provide feedback, we will discuss areas for improvement and the way that you can make these improvements. Then we will begin the process again, as many times as necessary, until you have a finished project.
