Traditionally trained in the fine arts, I have applied my skills in many settings throughout a wide array of fields: computer aided drafting & modeling for mechanical engineering; senior designer for a graphic design agency; freelance print & web design for small businesses, non-profits, schools and big pharma; and most recently, educating college students in the traditional arts as well as digital painting & photo manipulation.
I worked in a print and web design company as Senior Designer from 1998-2002 using InDesign virtually every day. Since then I have worked as a freelance graphic designer, with clients large and small using InDesign. I have 15+ years of experience with the software, as well as ancillary experience using Quark Xpress. I also worked with an art-staffing agency doing on call pre-press work for magazines and other design work - again using InDesign and the rest of the Creative Suite.
I'm certified as an Adobe Certified Expert for Photoshop CS5. I have used Photoshop since version 3 and taught up to and including version CS6 on both Macintosh and Windows platforms. It is a powerhouse program for people pursuing a multitude of fields and one of the best of Adobe's Suite. I love using it and love teaching it!
In addition to my familiarity with InDesign and other publishing software, I have 2 decades of hardware and software experience. I understand output devices of all sorts, color management theory, and the difference between a file that lives in the digital world (generally RGB) and the printed result of that (generally CMYK). I have helped many people source and use- software, hardware, printers; as well as guide them to finding resources in the digital world.
I attended and graduated from California College of the Arts, with a BFA, concentration in Drawing. I've worked as a designer and artist for over 25 years and continue to produce my own art. For the past 5 years I've taught traditional and digital art courses at a Digital Art college in California. I also ran the weekend figure drawing sessions for the same digital art college for the past 4 years.
I have been making my living using computers for 25 years. I spent 10+ years working in a mechanical engineering department using Windows based machines and ended maintaining the system and serving as a resource and software support for the engineers. During the following 8 years I installed, managed, networked and did troubleshooting for the computers and labs of a small, private school in California, which used both Windows and Mac.
In my on-call, onsite design work I have used both platforms, depending on the client’s preference. In my most recent position as a Course Director in a digital arts college, we had both Mac and PC, and I taught for/on either platform depending on student preference and the computer labs we were in. I am comfortable setting up systems of either OS, installing software, connecting peripherals, troubleshooting and networking. Computers, of any dialect, are something I’ve been speaking for over two decades.
I’ve used Macintosh computers, starting in a design department, since the “doorstop” SE model. I love Macs for their easy to learn OS, the accessibility of arts related software and a generally intuitive paradigm. I am typing this little paragraph on my MacBook Pro which continues to serve me in most circumstances. While the PC market made hardware accessible for everyone who wanted a computer, Apple put “ease of use” within easy reach.
I’ve been working with PC computers for 25 years, from Windows 3.0, DOS prompts and floppy disk based programs to Windows 7, Google Drive and cloud-based everything. I am comfortable at the command line, fluent with Microsoft’s Suite, and confident installing, using and teaching just about any software available. I’ve customized installations, networked machines, and generally torn apart and put back together more computers than most people will ever touch in their lifetimes.
I have 5 years of formal Spanish language education, and 15 years of belonging to the latin community (Central-American) in California. I'm not the best person for a college level paper about Miguel Cervantes, but if you want accent improvement or basic conversational skills, I'll be happy to help! My fluency is also sufficient if a student wishes instruction in my other subjects, but is less comfortable with English as the language of instruction.
