There is an old saying that "those who don't study history are doom to repeat it and those that study history are to stand by helplessly while everyone repeats it." Actually we stand by and watch, then we analyze it and write about it! History is not all dusty old books and hours of writing, there are historians for almost everything that you can think of from astronauts to rock-n-roll to zoos. History can be fun. It allows us to get into the events and attempt to figure out the how and the why. History helps us to find out who we are and how we got where we are. History is my passion and part of that passion is to teach others how they too can love history.

My other great passion is literature. Literature encompasses much more that the classic novels, it is everything from rap music to soap operas. Reading can take you anywhere if you open your mind up and let it lead you there. Literature and History are two fields that go hand in hand. One can learn a lot about the world around the writer by reading the texts of their time.

I am a non-traditional student, who is pursuing a double masters in humanities and public history. History with a Early European concentration was my major and my minor is English/Literature. My specialty is Medieval/Middle Ages through the end of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. I am well versed in all periods of history. My GPA a 3.73 and I am a member of the NSCS and Pi Gamma Mu honor societies. I also have an AAS in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is important to language, reading and writing skills. Students need wide exposure to a wide variety of vocabulary building exercises. Spelling, comprehension and reading abilities will improve with a good vocabulary.

Writing

The ability to write well is as important as the ability to read and comprehend. Writing engages the mind and exercises the creative ability. A student who is pursuing a college education has a long future of writing ahead of her or him and being able to present one's thoughts in an intelligent manner is important.

I have a wide body of writing experience, and have been published in two academic journals.

Happy Thursday! Today, I am writing my thoughts on the importance of reading over the summer vacation for high school and college students. I know that it is mid-summer and the last thing that anyone wants to think about is reading one of the classics or a treatise on a historical event. BUT, by keeping the mind engaged you are keeping your creative juices flowing and not wasting some of the... read more
