I am interested in being your private tutor.
As a retired Civil Engineer from Gannett Fleming, I have a lot to offer you. I have spent the last ten years tutoring or teaching math in the Harrisburg School District and HACC. There were times at John Harris where I would present the lesson to the class because the long-term substitute teacher felt uncomfortable doing so. I have also taught several Intermediate Algebra classes at HACC, and I have also worked in the Math Lab.
I have learned a lot from other teachers and students on how to do problems different ways. A student in Grade 5 taught me the lattice method of multiplication.
I have always had a flare for teaching and tutoring students of all ages. I have a special love for and have tutored math and its allied subjects such as physics, trigonometry, statics, and chemistry.
I tend to be hands-on, asking the student to cut out triangles or measuring real items. Often I will answer a question with a question, such as:
Student: “Does the red reflector go on the back or front of the bicycle?”
Tutor: “What color are the tail lights on a car?”
Student: “Thank you”
Last summer I ran a math camp called “Off to a Running Start” for Grade 9 students who were going to Sci Tech High School.
I spend much of my free time volunteering for Recycle Bicycle, a ministry that repairs and provides bicycles at no charge for children and adults. We accentuate bicycle safety, and teach the person how to fix his own bike.
It is my goal to combine my range of experience, compassion and enthusiasm to help you and other students reach your goals.
Sincerely,
Philip
