I work with students at their home!

My background is as an Educator and Mechanical Engineer who, after working 23 years in the computer industry as an Electro-Mechanical Packaging Engineer, returned to college (Night School) to become a professional teacher, earning 14 years of teaching experience in Massachusetts public high schools, and then continuing my student experience by an additional 6 years' experience teaching at the community college level (adult education).

I have earned two undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering, a Master's degree in Education, and I have completed coursework towards the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Education Management/Supervision. I am a published author and dedicated to the success of my students.

First, I will do everything I can to help you to achieve your academic goals. I offer students free email support between tutoring sessions if they need it.

I do not tutor students in exactly the "same way" they are taught in the classroom. Everyone has "different" learning styles. Together we will discover the learning style approach that works for you as an individual!

Finally, there are no "canned techniques" or "secret shortcuts" to subject mastery. I am willing to give my best effort to help students to succeed.

I am not the "answer" man - I am a professional educator and I make every effort to be certain students understand what needs to be done to master the subject. I am not a "homework buddy." Although homework problems are useful as examples, I do not sit at the table and "do" the homework. I will provide students with presentations and solved problems. (Since presentations must be done correctly and in a usable format, I do not "work on the fly"). I am a caring educator with the ability to help students to master the subject material and I will give students the confidence and knowledge to go forward on your own. Best of all, no worksheets! I earn my pay by directly interacting with the student.

Special Notes:
I am available for "Home Schooling" assignments. Contact me for special rates based on term of commitment.

A word to parents: My job, as I see it, is to maximize your student's learning abilities. I promise you that I will be committed, accessible and caring. We will work together to customize a strategy for your student and execute that plan as a team. Cancel one or all sessions with notice, and there is never a charge.

ACT Math

I've been teaching and tutoring the ACT for the last three years, and in that time I've learned that ACT Math is nothing like the math students are used to seeing in high school. It is not more difficult or fundamentally different – the ACT presents math like no other test. Even students who do well in their high school math classes (even students in AP Calculus and Statistics) sometimes do poorly on the ACT. The test is quirky, and many students are puzzled by the types of questions the ACT asks. I teach my students more than just the math skills they need to answer the questions. I teach them how to read the test, how to understand and break down the questions (in short – how to interpret the alien language of ACT Math). Using this holistic approach, my student's scores improve by several points on average. I can help even students who hate math, because it is not the math on the ACT that is hard - it is the questions.

ACT Reading

My skills as a teacher and an Engineer are invaluable to you as you prepare for the ACT Reading section. We will review relevant test selections, practice questions, their responses and examine which answers are the “best answers”. I will teach you the correct methodology to dissect articles and extract the information you need. I will teach you to be able to use the information supplied by the question itself to answer the questions. You will be taught to apply these techniques on a daily basis as added practice prior to taking the exam.

ACT Science

What is in a name? The ACT Science Reading section is one of the most feared sections of the ACT, filling science-literate students with trepidation and anxiety. Fortunately, the Science Reading section is not nearly as frightening as it sounds. In fact, this section is simply based on basic reasoning, chart evaluation, graph reading and little else. Science knowledge is not tested, (although fundamentals are helpful), so if you slept through biology and chemistry, you may still pass. The ACT Science section is made up of simple science concepts wrapped up in big words and requires only a skilled interpreter like myself to show you the way through and how to apply a little bit of common sense.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is the foundation higher math course upon which all-future math courses are built. My skills as a Tutor, Engineer and public High school teacher will help any student understand the fundamentals of Algebra 1. In addition, I can show students the best approaches to solve problems and how to use shortcuts to their advantage. I will demonstrate the rules concerning the “why” of each step in the process. I will explain methodologies and build student confidence with each session.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 expands upon the mathematical principles learned in Algebra 1. Topics studied in Algebra 2 include: rules of operations and relations, equations and inequalities, quadratic functions, powers and solving polynomials. A large portion of algebra 2 is trigonometry and geometry. Individual high school courses of Algebra 2 may vary in scope/content, but they all expand on the concepts taught in Algebra 1.
I will explain each individual step of every type of equation. For many, learning algebra 2 seems impossible, while other students may see it as an extension of previously mastered skills.
My approach is as follows:
•Create a lesson plan based around the student’s needs.
•Each lesson plan will include topics the student may have trouble with.
•Use the student's homework and book, whenever possible/available.
•Ask the student to work the problems to see where she may be going wrong.
Sometimes a student may be missing only one-step in a problem.
Seeing the student's work in action is a good way to catch mistakes.
•Cover not only the basics but more advanced topics as well.
•Ask the student if they have any questions and what needs to be covered next.
•Answer the student’s immediate questions, and use upcoming assignments to create the lesson plan for the next tutoring session.

American History

American History encompasses the background of America and the human experience of its citizens. American History helps us understand ourselves in the context of our times and traditions. History means not only the record of the past but also the discipline of investigating and interpreting our country's past. The study of American History allows students to experience critical thinking as well as cultivating careful analysis of various types of quantitative and qualitative evidence.

Archaeology

I have a strong background in ancient history and western civilization. This combined with my degree in Engineering and a solid understanding of soils, (the processes of soil formation and the factors that affect soil chemistry) and physics provides me with a unique understanding of what environmental events are associated with the artifacts of a specific archaeological finds. A good example of using soil science to better understand historical events, in conjunction with the archeological record, would have to be one of the great volcanic eruptions of Santorini, which is widely believed to have devastated the Minoan Civilization through a combination of a devastating tsunami, and explosive eruption. It is theorized that a super-heated pyroclastic cloud traveled across the Aegean on a cushion of super-hot gas and water vapor. Two hundred foot layers of Tephra, the product of such proclasyms, consist of varying thickness of ash, non-crystalline forms of silica (pumice, or volcanic glass) blankets the remains of the island. Extreme geologic events destroyed one of history's earliest and greatest civilizations, but preserved a wealth of advanced artifacts, such as pottery and frescos.
The sciences of pedology (the study of soils in their natural environment), and archaeology rely on each disciplines accrued knowledge on every site. This is especially true concerning excavations Native American sites throughout North America. The arrangement and burial of the artifacts found by archaeologists, such as hunting tools, cookware and other camp indicators, will help explain the daily lifestyle of the inhabitants. Whereas a soils scientist may examine the pit and find that the soil below the artifacts consisted of a well-compacted silty-loam with significant organic material, but a new horizon abruptly rests on this soil layer and is a poorly sorted mix of medium to fine grained, well-rounded gravel. The archaeologist and the soil scientist both realize that this evidence suggests something changed the conditions of the campsite in a way that caused the tribe to abandon its camp.

This is how science usually works; no single person has the complete picture and requires colleagues of different disciplines to fully develop a feasible explanation.

Astronomy

Astronomy has been one of my passions since the time I ground my own mirrors and lenses for my first telescope. I stay current with the science and I have studied the universe all my life.

ASVAB

As an Air Force (volunteer) veteran of the Vietnam era, I can associate with your desire to serve your country and I have an appreciation of the obstacles you may feel are in the way of your enlistment. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is the most widely used multiple-aptitude test battery in the world. It is a general-knowledge based test. The ASVAB measures your strengths, weaknesses, and potential for future success for various civilian and military occupations and is an indicator for success in future endeavors whether you choose to go to college, vocational school, or a military career. If you are trying to get into the military and need to pass the ASVAB, I can help. I am an in your own home tutor with 20 years of teaching or tutoring experience and I can help with the General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Mathematics Knowledge components of the ASVAB exam. I have a background of adult education, and a Master’s Degree in education. I can provide insights into test taking strategies that will help relieve the anxiety and show you how to get the highest possible score.

Biology

I have had held a longstanding fascination with biology throughout my entire life. Biology is especially relevant to me because of my complex medical conditions that require unique treatments related to the interactions of compounds and soluble supplements on the human endocrine system. I have worked with students at all levels of biology in elementary, middle, and high school. My primary focus with students is to help them make connections to the real world, particularly when dealing with processes at the cellular level to understand the intricate workings single cellular and multi-cellular creatures. My presentations consist of animations, analogies and power point presentations to help students fully understand the material and to actively engage students. I hold a Master’s Degree in Education, I have taught in public schools and I continue to be a scientist at heart.

Business

I have 23 years’ experience in managing corporate business functions. My background includes extensive management and day-to-day operation of manufacturing groups, including a stint as the Director of Manufacturing Operations for an Opto-Electronics company. During the course of my lengthy career with several Fortune 500 companies, I managed product development groups, engineering groups and manufacturing operations from starting concept though achievement of goals. A necessary part of every position was the need to build up relationships with vendors, customers and co-workers. I recruited personnel to meet strategically defined corporate direction, objectives, and targeted initiatives. I successfully developed and implemented internal policies and procedures instrumental in achieving corporate goals. I restructured groups to meet changing business needs. In the latter years of my career, I became an advocate of “Lean Manufacturing” and streamlining of efforts through the use of technology.

Calculus

Calculus is the study of change, with the basic focus being on the Rate of change and the Accumulation. As an Engineer, I was required to use the elements of calculus to solve complex problems and to justify the design approach. From an educator’s perspective, I appreciate the student having an almost paralyzing fear of the subject. Calculus is, after all, abstract math for most students. I approach the subject with respect of the student’s ability and my experience of the workplace to be able to provide examples of how the math is applied in real-life situations.
Presentations and discussions of concepts are keys to unlocking understanding. My background and experience are of benefit to the student.

Career Development

Throughout my 47 years of working, I have achieved my job goals in three different careers. I am knowledgeable in the Academic & Corporate workplace. I have been a "lowly peon" and the Director of a company. I have changed careers in mid-life and re-engineered myself to meet my new goals. I will be truthful and realistic in my guidance, and dreams can be fulfilled in many different ways.

College Counseling

1. I obtained ALL my degrees through "college night school" - I understand the working parent/college course fundamentals.
-ASME
-BSME
-MA TEACHER CERTIFICATION
-MASTERS IN EDUCATION
-ADVANCED GRADUATE STUDIES
2. I taught/counseled at a Community College for 4 years.
3. I worked as a public school teacher for 13 years in an inner-city school and counseled numerous young adults about their college choices.

COOP/HSPT

I have years of test preparation experience with students of all ages. My background as an educator, tutor and test prep specialist enables me to help students make the most of their study time. Since the exam changes from year to year, no student can become familiar with the test format and content. Each testing year brings new question styles, or a different number of questions within a given section. However, the content area that each test covers remains the same. I understand the nature of the stress that this could cause a student.

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary school is an important time in your child's academic development. I believe that an individualized approach to learning can build the skills, habits and attitudes your child needs for a solid academic foundation and a lifetime of success.
I will work with students individually, utilizing a variety of instructional and enrichment materials. I will strive to improve the literacy standards of students using recreational, academic and enrichment activities for them. I will listen to and read to the student, utilizing storytelling activities, and poems as appropriate. I will work with students in the areas of mathematics, implementing problem solving strategies and active learning. I will encourage students to make wise choices and develop responsible behaviors, especially in regards to study skills and homework assignments. I will always establish and maintain a cooperative relationship with parents and students

My goal as your child's tutor is to help them gain confidence and develop creative and critical thinking skills. I believe it is important to provide positive reinforcement and that every child has the ability to succeed, given the appropriate tools and a proper learning environment.

I have experience tutoring children and enjoy applying various learning approaches to discover what works best for each individual child. I feel that it is important for students to continue learning throughout the year in that it gives them a distinct advantage when school begins again in the fall. I look forward to working with your child and can assure you that he/she will have my full dedication to help them achieve and progress academically.

Elementary Math

I will analyze class and grade level data in mathematics at the elementary school level for making informed decisions relative to instructional practices in preparation for tutoring. I will assess skills and individual needs (both initially and ongoing) of students within an elementary school setting for determining the types of strategies needed to bring about student achievement and gains in math. I will instruct individual students with the goal of improving mathematics achievement levels. Part of the instruction will be the preparation of a variety of written materials for the purpose of clarifying subject understanding demonstrating to the student the best practices in math and/or conveying information. I can collaborate with teachers, related to mathematics at the elementary level, for the purpose of differentiating instruction and adhering to scope and sequence guides and district curriculum.

Elementary Science

One of my life's passions is science. To me there is nothing more exciting to see the spark of discovery when a person accepts science, any science as part of their academic toolbox. My background in Mechanical Engineering coupled with my work in public schools with a variety of students provides the perfect mix of talent and excitement necessary to spark young minds. I will bring novel approaches to the subject matter and I am able to present real life examples and applications of the sciences around us.

English

Proper English grammar is probably the last thing on your mind. However, in the process of managing all aspects of your life, you will need to write. Proper English grammar is essential to success in any endeavor. Without proper grammar, you will sound uneducated and unprofessional. The English language is a powerful tool, and using it properly can help you earn more money in the end.
The term “English” usually refers to English grammar: a body of rules that describe the structure of expressions in the English language. This includes the structure of words, phrases, clauses and sentences. The grammar of English is approached in two ways: descriptive grammar is based on analysis of the body of text and describes grammatical structures thereof, whereas prescriptive grammar attempts to use the identified rules of a given language as a tool to govern the linguistic behavior of speakers.
Most English refers to the generalized present-day Standard English, the form of speech found in all types of public discourse, including both formal and informal speech.
Grammar can be divided into morphology, which describes the formation of words, and syntax, which describes the construction of meaningful phrases, clauses, and sentences out of words.
Not everyone has excellent grammar skills, but almost everyone can use tools to create well-written documents. I will show you how to take advantage of electronic grammar and spelling checkers. (While these do not catch all mistakes, they may point out mistakes that are not actually wrong, and they help you to see areas that you need to improve). I will explain the benefits of setting the document aside for a short time. Finally, I will teach you to read it aloud to further check for clarity.

ESL/ESOL

I will provide intensive instruction in English Language, Grammar and Usage, using the DIRECT IMMERSION method. The focus is to improve the students’ English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The goal of our sessions will be: developing proficiency in the English language. Students have to acquire a new language, and they have to adapt to North American culture to be able to actively participate in American schools, or work settings. Second language acquisition is a developmental process that integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in the context of academic learning. ESOL students learn functional, social, and academic vocabulary and key concepts to give students the language to communicate with native speakers at school and in the community.

Finite Math

My background as an Engineer, classroom instructor and tutor provide my expertise with the formulae, techniques, and concepts associated with finite mathematics – all subsets of the mathematics in which I use and tutor. Students who may need help with finite mathematics often have specific concerns and very particular topics, normally related to compound interest and probability. I strive to identify these areas early and focus on them. Many of the other related areas of mathematics can be found in my profile including, algebra, calculus, geometry, linear and algebra.

Finite mathematics is an over-broad subject meant to cover the mathematics necessary in the business world. The study of "finite mathematics" can be done at all levels starting from the first steps of basic arithmetic and continuing right up to cutting-edge academic research. Students who are taking classes titled "finite mathematics" are often doing so based on a requirement, and the subjects are wide-ranging and disparate ranging from statistics to linear algebra to logic. The typical classroom lecture deals with applications to real-world problems where the results of using mathematics are emphasized over the reasons why the math work. However, understanding the underlying principles is paramount for doing well in such a course.

Students studying finite mathematics are helped by having a strong conceptual basis for calculating what they want to calculate. Attempting to rely on formula memorization does not work because there are so many different ways of asking finite mathematics-type questions. My tutoring approach focuses on building a conceptual awareness of what the various concepts and calculations entail, what questions can be answered, and perhaps most importantly, what questions can't be answered.

GED

The GED is the "second chance" stepping-stone for many adult learners. My experience with High School students and adult learners (at the community college level) allow me to have a unique insight into both the importance and the difficulty of this test. I have an extensive background in education and I am able to impart a caring, yet structured method to subject presentation. I have the means necessary to provide a sense of structure to learning, and I am able to provide methods/study skills that will allow the student to go beyond their GED success, and fit into the community of learners.

General Computer

I am able to explain and simplify all aspects of home & general computing. I have worked with computer hardware and peripheral devices since 1974 as both a designer and an avid user. My background allows me to teach you to assemble and maintain home systems as well as update programs and install operating systems. I have extensive general knowledge of all Microsoft Operating systems, including popular Office platforms. I am familiar with anti-virus software and have the ability to teach you how to make use of your system by customizing its settings.

Geography

Geography is the science that studies lands, features, inhabitants, and phenomena of the Earth. Geography is more than maps and locating famous world cities. Four historical traditions in geographical research are: spatial analysis of natural and human phenomena (geography – the study of distribution), area studies (places and regions), study of human-land relationships, and research in the earth sciences. Modern geography is an all-encompassing discipline that seeks to understand Earth and all of its human and natural complexities – not merely where objects are, but how they have changed and come to be. Geography is known as "a world discipline" and "a bridge between human and physical science". Geography is divided into two main branches: the human geography and the physical geography. My approach is not rout memorization, but requires to student to understand and appreciate how geographical features have shaped the people living in a locale and how geography has influenced the history of many countries.

Geology

Geology is “under our feet”, every day. Having lived in New England for a large part of my life I have an innate appreciation of rocks, minerals, and the processes that both created and destroyed them. I have always viewed Geology as (probably) the most observable (next to the weather), and fun science. Geology is the scientific study of our planet, including the materials that it is made of, the physical and chemical processes that occur on its surface and in its interior, and the history of the Earth. When explaining geology I use easy words in regular English - not giant words no one understands. I treat Geology as a fun subject and I strive to make sure students do not assume it is difficult.

Geometry

I fully understand the student's frustration with geometry. I will help students to feel more comfortable with the subject matter, by relating it to real situations. I will meet with parents or guardians to discuss student progress. When I am tutoring someone, my main goal is for the student to gain confidence in the subject in which they are struggling. Most of the time, students are frustrated with themselves and just feel like giving up. I will be there to help the students through these hard times and ultimately help them to succeed in meeting their goals. I will assist my student in understanding calculations done by hand or by geometry tools such as compasses and protractors. I will encourage independent thinking while working on assignments. Gentle correction is utilized to promote cognizance of common mathematical errors. I will motivate and challenge my students to foster a healthy sense of accomplishment and self-esteem in the student to promote continued academic growth and development.

Government & Politics

As citizens, students are introduced to the government and politics of the United States on a daily basis. They should be able to engage in discussion of the institutions, political culture and recent history of the United States. Students should be aware of how world events have implications for American politics and the changing role of the United States in the world. I will give students an analytical perspective on government and politics in the United States. This will include both the study of general concepts used to interpret U.S. government and politics and the analysis of specific examples. I will explain the need for familiarity with the various institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas that constitute U.S. government and politics. I will work to make certain students:
•become acquainted with the variety of theoretical perspectives and explanations for various behaviors and outcomes
•know important facts, concepts, and theories pertaining to U.S. government and politics
•understand typical patterns of political processes and behavior and their consequences (including the components of political behavior, the principles used to explain or justify various government structures and procedures, and the political effects of these structures and procedures)
•are able to analyze and interpret basic data relevant to U.S. government and politics (including data presented in charts, tables, and other formats)
•are able to critically analyze relevant theories and concepts as they reflect on government

Grammar

Grammar and usage can be confusing for even the best of students. Unlike math, there is no absolute, apparent "best answer". What "sounds" correct may not be grammatically correct, and vice versa. My over 30 years' experience as a student, published author and teacher has given me a wealth of knowledge and background to help students through the difficult maze of English language grammar.

GRE

My approach to tutoring the GREs is to focus on your specific weak areas, while reinforcing your strengths. The GRE does not test any math past the 10th grade, but it does present “tricky” questioning techniques. The best defense to use is to understand test-taking techniques and answer selection strategies. The verbal section is focused on vocabulary as it relates to context clues and developing strong reading comprehension skills. The writing section assesses whether you can concisely write two 30-minute organized essays. I am confident that I can help you significantly improve your scores in all three areas. I have been tutoring students in all areas of test prep ACT (all), SAT (all), PRAXIS, and ASVAB for several years. I will be able to help you define your needs and provide you the tools to get the best score you can.

Handwriting

Handwriting is only successful when another person can read and clearly understand the written communication. I learned handwriting when it was the main method for communicating ideas in school. I enjoy "cursive handwriting" to this day and pride myself upon the fact that people can actually READ my writing. I feel the ability to handwrite sentences adds a great deal to a person's character; for example, to be able to hand-write a note or a letter demonstrates a level of personalization in reaching out to someone. Handwriting is one of the most complex things we do to communicate and I have a deep appreciation of this complexity. I have the patience to help writers, no matter their age or skill level

ISEE

The ISEE (Independent Schools Entrance Exam) is a high stakes school admission test that has three levels, the Lower Level, Middle Level, and Upper Level. I understand the nature of the stress that this could cause a student. My years of test preparation experience with students of all ages will ensure that you are prepared. My background as an educator, tutor and test prep specialist will enable you to make the most of your study time. I will explain how the ISEE has different forms at each level for security purposes and how to approach that in your preparation. I will help you manage your way through the carefully constructed and standardized verbal and quantitative reasoning test section that measures your capability for learning.

I will assist you in understanding the reading comprehension and mathematics achievement section that is designed to provide schools with specific information about your strengths and weakness in those areas. Finally, as a professional writer I will demonstrate how to conquer the essay section, a timed essay, written in response to a particular prompt. Since a “practice run” of the ISEE is not allowed, you must be prepared prior to taking the actual test. This means allowing yourself sufficient preparation time before the test. Last minute (even last month) cramming is not a wise choice. In addition, you may test only when making a formal application to a school. That means this high-stakes exam allows you to be tested only once within a six-month period.

Literature

The word literature literally means, "Things made from letters". Literature is not confined to published sources (although, under some circumstances, unpublished sources can also be exempt). The four major classifications of literature are poetry, prose, fiction, and non-fiction. I offer support to students of English Literature. My aim is to help students come to grips with the novels, poetry and plays they are studying so that they can talk and write about them with confidence and fluency. I will focus on extracting the “most” from the work under study and explaining its importance and relevance to everyday life. The sessions are informal and tailored to each student's own ability and goals, with reference to the classroom syllabus where appropriate. I can provide sessions on a wide variety of writers. I carefully explain how Literature may consist of texts based on factual information (journalistic or non-fiction), as well as on original imagination, such as autobiography, and reflective essays. I explain how Literatures can be divided according to historical periods, genres, and political influences. I discuss how the concept of genre, (A genre consists of artistic works, which fall within a certain central theme.) which earlier was limited, has now broadened over the centuries.

Mechanical Engineering

I have both an ASME (Northeastern University) and a BSME (Central NE College). I applied this knowledge by working as an electro-mechanical packaging engineer, mechanical engineer, and manufacturing engineer during a career that spanned 26 years with Fortune 500 Companies. I fostered engineering design involving stress and structural analysis of computers and their components – including thermal analysis. My focus was on product design and reliability. I transitioned to manufacturing and worked on product processes, manufacturing cost analysis and Just-in-Time methods. I have published internal technical reports, product specifications, and product process documents for all my designs. I have also published several technical articles related to thermal analysis and system reliability. I bring to the student not only my background of engineering skills, but my ability as a teacher to help foster an understanding of difficult concepts.

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is a commercial spreadsheet application written and distributed by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows. It features calculation, graphing tools, and pivot tables, Excel forms part of Microsoft Office. I can teach you how to use this software effectively, but more important I can teach you how to find your way “around” any question you may need answered AFTER our sessions. I can you show the simple syntax used to enter equations and how to locate “boilerplate” equations that work. Once you have mastered the fundamentals you will be able and confident to proceed on your own.

Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is the anchor mail management application for Microsoft Windows. Outlook forms part of the Microsoft Office suite. As the number one e-mail client and personal information manager, Microsoft Outlook offers a set of uncomplicated features that maximize the management of your e-mail, schedule, and general daily activities, with the least amount of hassle possible. I can teach you how to use this software effectively, but more important I can teach you how to find your way “around” any question you need answered AFTER our sessions. Once you have mastered the fundamentals you will be able and confident to proceed on your own.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Probably the best tool ever created for developing presentations. I can show you how to make effective use of this software and how to incorporate its features into the best presentations you can create.

Microsoft Publisher

Microsoft Publisher is probably the most “fun to use” application in the MS Office Suite. I use it on a regular basis to create book covers for my published books and to add a touch of flair on all my work. I will show you how to use this application to create everything from simple birthday cards to, well, books covers for your novel. My fearless approach to MS Office contains the “Start slow” and “Use it” philosophy that has helped my students become experts in a matter of days, not months.

Microsoft Word

I use MS Word on an "hourly basis" everyday. I can teach you the best way to use this software so that it becomes a powerful tool in your writing arsenal, rather than a confusing roadblock.

Organic Chemistry

I have 23 years’ experience as a Mechanical Engineer and, at first glance, a direct connection to Organic Chemistry may not be evident. However, I have an intensive background in the selection of composite materials, the materials’ chemical content and the expected environmental issues, (outgassing, toxicity, etc.). I can show how the broad diversity of molecular structures available in polymers, and composites would result in combinations of properties that could not be achieved with “common compounds.” My background allows me to make the connection of Organic chemistry to everyday life. Simply put, Organic chemistry is the study of molecules composed mainly of carbon and hydrogen, however some of these molecules may (also) contain the elements of: Nitrogen, Sulfur, Oxygen, Phosphorous, Silicon, and members of the Halogens (F, Cl, Br, I, and At). Organic compounds are generally composed of long carbon chains displaying covalent bonds. Everyday things, such as caffeine, plastics, and paints are all composed of hydrocarbons! Organic chemistry also explains the composition of living things, and their structures. The focus on organic chemistry in living things has to do with carbon, which is essential to maintaining life. In addition to content-area knowledge and strategies for both studying and learning, I impart to students the following:
•A conceptual framework of organic chemistry.
•Fundamental knowledge of organic chemistry.
•Abstract concepts in a manner to which the students can relate.
•Fundamental procedures for conducting basic research of the topics discussed in organic Chemistry.

Philosophy

Aside from my formal graduate school classwork in philosophy (in preparation to becoming an educator), I have continued to study philosophy and develop personal stances in order to describe what I need to accomplish in order to reach out to students.
Some philosophers feel the need to expound names and dates of numerous peers, and although such background may be interesting in itself, it does not “teach philosophy”.
The best way to teach philosophical thinking is just by having conversations with others. Over the years, I have developed a methodology for teaching students how to think philosophically. I can foster philosophical thinking through discussion, reading and writing philosophy. I also subscribe to the premise that Philosophy tutoring is best-accomplished one on one. When tutoring philosophy, I use the following methods:
1. I clarify the arguments of others by simplifying those arguments to find their premise, conclusion, and justification.
2. I help students improve their own argument(s), no matter what their position is.
3. I help students research to allow them to understand what other philosophers have to say about a topic.
There are three ways I help students read philosophy:
1. I explain that students should be willing to research and look up difficult vocabulary definitions.
2. I review the textual material with them and help make sense out of the text – to the point of offering an interpretation of the text, without overly influencing the clarity of an argument.
3. I summarize the arguments.
I do not demand that students know how to “write philosophy”. Nevertheless, I can teach students how to write philosophical essays.
1. I teach them about formal logic, requirements for good arguments, justification, and fallacies.
2. I ask them to read examples of philosophical essay writing that they can emulate.
3. I may ask them to write about “How to write a philosophical essay”. (Writing about a subject will help to internalize their understanding.)
5. I ask them to consider various objections to their arguments. (A student should reply to at least one good objection in their essay.)

Phonics

My years of experience as an author, educator and teacher are invaluable to helping students read, spell and write. I will work with students to develop phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate English phonemes—in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns (graphemes) that represent them.

I will use my educational background to create lessons that enable beginning readers to decode new written words by sounding them out, or in phonics terms, blending the sound-spelling patterns.

My presentations will focus on the spoken and written units within words, as a sublexical approach and, will often contrast with Whole language, a word-level-up philosophy for teaching reading.

Physical Science

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Physical Science was a major part of my career for over 25 years. Physical Science is a valuable but older part of science. Sometimes known as central science, Physical Science connects the laws of science to all the sciences: chemistry, earth science, biology, physics, material science & astronomy. I continue to pursue my studies in Physical Science as a full-time hobby and I am well versed on the latest theories and findings. My enthusiasm for the subject allows me to impart to students the notion that “science is fun”, and teaches them to understand the methods and formulas necessary to make sense of it all.

Praxis

A career in the field of education and teaching is very rewarding as it gives you a stable career and financial security. My years of Educational work and actual test-taking experience will be invaluable to your preparation.

You cannot just walk into the test center with inadequate preparation even if you are confident of your mastery over the skills being assessed by Praxis tests. The Praxis tests consist of questions that are presented in a specific format. You need to be aware of this type of test format and you should have practice in answering the questions asked within the time allotted for answering them.

I will familiarize you with the different types of questions that appear on the Reading and Writing tests. To prepare you for the essay, I will instruct you what constitutes a high scoring one. You will also undergo the process of writing an essay in the time allotted.

Because Math is a particularly nerve-wracking topic for many students, I am sensitive to the concerns of adult learners. I will instruct you in the many areas of math that you could be tested on: number operations, negative numbers, exponents, square roots, order of operations, decimals, fractions, percentages, algebra, geometry, data analysis, graphs, probability, and measurements.

It is evident that you need to put in sustained effort in preparing for the Praxis test since it is such an important aspect necessary to become established in a career in education

I will demonstrate useful test-taking strategies and show you where to access practice questions that are similar to what is on the exam. I will use clear explanations, numerous examples, and graphics to help you during this review. I will not only prepare you for the Praxis test, but I will do so in a way that is individually tailored to your needs and interesting. After completing this review, you will be confident and prepared to pass the Praxis Exam!

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is the transition subject between Elementary Math and Algebra 1. This is as much a confidence-building subject as it is strictly a math-learning exercise. My years of classroom experience with young adults will allow me to understand their needs, remedy any technical difficulties they may have and eliminate "bad math habits" they may have developed. Together we will develop the skills necessary to have confidence that math can be a subject that is understandable and enjoyable.

Precalculus

I have a Master’s Degree in Education and have I have tutored Math students at all levels (including Pre-Calculus). The daily “repetition of concepts” I experience in tutoring my students reinforces my subject understanding and gives me insight into how to best help struggling students. I possess strong verbal communication skills and I am patient when working with students for whom learning does not come easily. My methods are to facilitate the development of student learning skills and concepts while assisting students in solving problems, without doing the work for them. I always provide guidance, encouragement, and maintain a positive attitude. I answer specific questions about the subject material presented using a variety of methods including presentations of problem solving. All sessions encourage good study habits and I strive to facilitate learning, without lecturing the material.

Proofreading

I am a published author and a professional writer. I have written (literally) thousands of paragraphs, articles, papers, blogs, novels and documents. For the past fifty years, I have worked with and at times struggled with proofreading. A sterile passage may be perfectly correct in grammar, but proofreading will reveal ways to keep the subject lively and still remain within the boundaries of correct usage, punctuation and grammar. We all need to review our writing for correct use and to remove the glaring errors that creep in when we write in haste. I have the background and experience to explain what "went wrong" and how to make it right. A cleanly written text is a joy to read.

Psychology

Psychology is a broad science that encompasses general psychology, developmental psychology and abnormal psychology. Part of the difficulty in learning the material is adsorbing all the terms and definitions. My expertise lies in my ability to make sense of these disparate topics. I will help with organizational study methods to organize theory information as well as use of student’s text and note taking. Together we will find “outside” study materials that are relevant to your understanding. If you need to write an essay, a case study or a term paper I will assist you every step of the way, from outline to final proof. From Freud to Jung, I will help you get where you want to go. I find the trick to tutoring psychology, is to connect the material to real world examples and to make note of when the answers are counter-intuitive.

Public Speaking

From my earliest days as the "Daily Announcement" reader on the high school intercom to my classroom lectures in Heating and Air conditioning Technology, I have been noted for my humor and unflappable delivery (yes, it means something). "Way Back" in high school I was able to flawlessly sneak in the occasional zinger before Principal Bird hit the "Kill Switch" - I was that confident in my ability.

As life progressed, and I transitioned for Engineering presentations to Educational lectures I only improved. Like vintage wine (or old cheese) I learned to put aside my fears and get my point across. I am no Philadelphia lawyer, but I am not afraid to stand up in front of a crowd and speak about the subject at hand, or any other subject that might be necessary to bring up.

Reading

Understanding the content of a written passage can be confusing for even the best of students. It is absolutely essential that a student be able to extract the content from books and articles. My over 30 years' experience as a student, published author and teacher has given me a wealth of knowledge and background to help students dissect a written passage to extract the author's intent.

Religion

I am a Roman Catholic, and I was raised in an Italian Catholic family. My religion started, for me, with the Latin Mass - YES, I am that old! I had six aunts that were sisters in the convent, an uncle who was a missionary priest, and dozens of Italian relatives who were Bishops and priests. I, myself, was an altar boy (That was the term then). Before I went into the military, I knew all the "rules and regulations".

After the military, my religion became a different part of my life. It was not so much the rules and regulations, as it was the application of religious ethics in everyday life that became real. When my daughters were born, I taught Religious Ed from 1980 through 2007, mostly Confirmation Preparation, but almost every grade in between.

My pet peeve is those who attempt to "inflict" their viewpoints on the student. I believe the student needs the correct teaching, but also needs to be able to form their conscious of understanding what that teaching means to them. Difficult? Yes! Impossible? No!

SAT Math

SAT math can seem overwhelming to any student. Fortunately, it is not. My skills as a Tutor, Engineer and public High school teacher can help any student overcome "math anxiety" and approach the test in a logical manner - ensuring the best possible score. I can show students reliable methods to solve problems and how to use shortcuts to their advantage. I will demonstrate time management techniques that will allow the student to have "extra minutes" to work on the more difficult problems in order to boost their overall score.

SAT Reading

My skills as a teacher and an Engineer will be invaluable to you as you prepare for the SAT Reading section. Together we will review relevant test articles, practice questions, their responses and discuss possible solutions. I will teach you the proper way to dissect an article and extract the information you need, using the information supplied by the question itself. You will be able to apply these techniques on a daily basis as an added practice prior to taking the exam.

SAT Writing

My skill as a professional writer and author will help you to prepare for the written portion of your SAT exam. Together we will review writing forms, correct grammar and other elements that are unique to this test.

I will demonstrate by examples, ways to improve sentence structure and readability.

I will teach you the correct methodology to successfully analyze and understand the exam questions.

Social Studies

I have a Master's Degree in education and I have worked with students at all levels for at least 20 years. For each student I can provide an appreciation about the social structure of different peoples through discussion and reference to data. My extensive travel experiences allow me to teach students that social studies helps them to develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good. My educational background is beneficial in teaching that we are citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. I will teach students that commerce and geography are critical to their everyday thinking, based upon my years of work in Industry.

Sociology

Sociology broadens your mind and helps you to see your world in new and interesting ways. Many people confuse sociology with other sciences that have some similarities, like psychology. However, Sociology is quite different. Rather than asking why a person would commit a crime, become a successful entrepreneur, or homeless, (as if it related to something intrinsic within that person, or as a manifestation of their personality), Sociologists ask: what is it about the structure of our society or our relationships that enable certain things to happen?
Sociologists are all around us. They work in the government, for private corporations, and in non-profit institutions. Sociologists help us uncover the “taken for granted nature” of everyday life and expose power imbalances. I will show you different theories to explain different social phenomena.
I have over 12 years’ experience working in an inner-city public high school where I helped lead discussions in class and counseled individual students. (I met one-on-one with students to help them understand vital concepts about the social world around them). Due to my experience as a professional writer, I am an excellent judge of what it takes to make a paper stand out above the rest. Courses I have completed while obtaining my Master’s Degree in Education include: Introduction to Sociology, Social Theorists, American Society, Inequality, Race and Ethnicity, among a few others. I have spent an extensive amount of time studying gender inequality.
As a tutor, I can provide quality, personalized instruction. Please let me know whether it is for a particular assignment, a test, or general comprehension. If you are looking for help in another topic area, please provide the name of the course with which you need assistance, and I will let you know the extent of my experience and if I can help.

Spelling

The English language can present difficulties for many elementary school students. Most students are confused by the phonetics (sound) of a word as opposed to the correct spelling of the word. Spelling has rules and exceptions, which further confuse the young learner. I can work through these issues with gentle correction and demonstration.

SSAT

The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) is an aptitude test for students in grades 5-11. This test consists of verbal, quantitative (math) and reading comprehension sections. My background in education and my relevant experience in test preparation at all levels will prove to be invaluable to students who need to achieve the highest score they can.

In addition, the test includes a writing sample portion, which asks the student to respond to a topic statement. Although the essay is not graded, a copy accompanies each SSAT score report sent to a school or consultant. My years of experience as a published author will be invaluable to those students who wish to learn how to write an essay that will “stand out” from the “forest” of essays received.

Study Skills

I have a Master's Degree in Education that I completed by study at night school. During that time I was able to develop and apply the necessary skills needed to complete the work regimen. I have helped many high school students apply these same skills to their circumstances.
Studying, schoolwork, papers, testing, homework can be overwhelming for anyone. The key to success in achieving scholastic serenity and conquering the "piles" of work is understanding the need to have a place to work, the tools to do the work and the methods/disciplines necessary to complete the assignments in the shortest time.
I can provide those organizational skills, based on my own experiences attending night school and maintaining a full time job. I can help the student change their habits and show the student how to incorporate successful methods in their "school toolbox".

TOEFL

TOEFL stands for: Test Of English as a Foreign Language. Almost 800,000 people take the TOEFL exam every year worldwide. A growing number of universities and colleges offer courses and academic study programs in English and students must have a good command of the English language. This is where the TOEFL comes into play. It is the most widely used academic English proficiency test in the world. Thousands of colleges and universities use the TOEFL to test and evaluate the English language competency of their students and academic personnel. In addition, many government agencies, sponsoring institutions and other authorities require TOEFL scores. The TOEFL test measures English language proficiency in these three disciplines: reading, listening and writing. You can take the TOEFL on a computer (CBT: Computer-Based Test) or you can take a paper-and-pencil version of the test.

Trigonometry

I fully understand the student's frustration with trigonometry. I will help students to feel more comfortable with the subject matter, by relating it to real situations. I will meet with parents or guardians to discuss student progress. My main goal is for the student to gain confidence in the subject. I will be there to help the students through hard times and ultimately help them to succeed in meeting their goals. I assist my students in understanding calculations. I encourage independent thinking while working on assignments. Gentle correction is utilized to promote cognizance of common mathematical errors. I will motivate and challenge students to foster a healthy sense of accomplishment and self-esteem to promote continued academic growth and development.

Vocabulary

The secret to success is having the right vocabulary for the situation at hand. I am a "master wordsmith", by virtue of my education and publications. Not only can I help a student understand what a word means (its raw definition) but I can demonstrate how to use the precise word to create the perfect verbal image. In addition the understanding of a word's meaning is paramount to being a successful reader and (of course) comprehending the topic presentation.

World History

World History requires students to engage with the dynamics of continuity and changes across the historical periods. I will teach you to analyze the processes and causes involved in these continuities and changes. World History provides students with an overview of the major world events and personalities that have helped shape modern world history. World history demonstrates global and multicultural perspectives. I will help students understand the interaction between humans and the environment I will demonstrate understanding of the development and interaction of cultures. I will explain state-building, expansion, and conflict
I will help in understanding the creation, expansion, and interaction of economic systems
The student will develop an understanding of the development and transformation of social structures. The student will evaluate the perspectives of the different social sciences by use of the tools of social science inquiry Students will learn how to: interpret and create maps, statistics, charts, diagrams, graphs, timelines, pictures, political cartoons. Students will learn how to utilize audiovisual materials, continua, written resources, art and artifacts to assist in analyzing and visualizing concepts in social studies as applies to World History.

Writing

I am a professional writer and author. I can help you write whatever it is you need to write and in such a way that only you will know you had help.
