I have been a teacher since 2001 when I began to assist teaching Ju Jitsu at USA Martial Arts in 2001. During this time, I also was a full-time student at Bloomsburg University where I studied Criminal Justice and Spanish. I spent some time in Puerto Rico for an internship at an orphanage in 2003 and it was during this time that I came to the conclusion that I wanted to work with youth either as a teacher or as a counselor.
I first tried being a counselor, starting at Kidspeace. Afterwards, I was hired as a school therapist at a middle school and a high school in Scranton. Unfortunately, I had a difficult time disconnecting myself from the stories that my students told me. I knew that I had to return to school to become a certified teacher.
Since I was fluent in Spanish, I went to West Virginia University to pursue my master's degree in Secondary Education, while teaching Spanish 100, 101, 102, 200, 203, and 204 as a graduate assistant for the Foreign Language Department. During my first year there, I decided to also pursue a master's degree in Foreign Languages, with a concentration in Latin American Literature.
While still studying at West Virginia University, I decided to travel throughout the Dominican Republic for a few weeks. A year later, I graduated and was hired as a Spanish high school teacher in Wetzel County, WV. After 1 year, I returned back to Pennsylvania, and within 6 months, I started to work at my current school district, Hamburg Area. This is my third year there as a Spanish teacher, but this year, I also became the Student Council's advisor. Both positions are very rewarding!
In addition, I am pursuing my ESL certification at Penn State Berks. I have successfully passed 4 out of the 5 required classes. I anticipate that I will offically be certified by the end of this summer. From the requried classes, I have had experience tutoring ESL students. Besides tutoring ESL students or my own Spanish students, I have also volunteered my time as a Homebound instructor.
In my spare time, I try to spend all of it with my boyfriend, my dogs, my family and my friends. Thank you for reading and considering me as a tutor!
