I have been a teacher since 2001 when I began to assist teaching Ju Jitsu at USA Martial Arts in 2001. During this time, I also was a full-time student at Bloomsburg University where I studied Criminal Justice and Spanish. I spent some time in Puerto Rico for an internship at an orphanage in 2003 and it was during this time that I came to the conclusion that I wanted to work with youth either as a teacher or as a counselor.
I first tried being a counselor, starting at Kidspeace. Afterwards, I was hired as a school therapist at a middle school and a high school in Scranton. Unfortunately, I had a difficult time disconnecting myself from the stories that my students told me. I knew that I had to return to school to become a certified teacher.
Since I was fluent in Spanish, I went to West Virginia University to pursue my master's degree in Secondary Education, while teaching Spanish 100, 101, 102, 200, 203, and 204 as a graduate assistant for the Foreign Language Department. During my first year there, I decided to also pursue a master's degree in Foreign Languages, with a concentration in Latin American Literature.
While still studying at West Virginia University, I decided to travel throughout the Dominican Republic for a few weeks. A year later, I graduated and was hired as a Spanish high school teacher in Wetzel County, WV. After 1 year, I returned back to Pennsylvania, and within 6 months, I started to work at my current school district, Hamburg Area. This is my third year there as a Spanish teacher, but this year, I also became the Student Council's advisor. Both positions are very rewarding!
In addition, I am pursuing my ESL certification at Penn State Berks. I have successfully passed 4 out of the 5 required classes. I anticipate that I will offically be certified by the end of this summer. From the requried classes, I have had experience tutoring ESL students. Besides tutoring ESL students or my own Spanish students, I have also volunteered my time as a Homebound instructor.
In my spare time, I try to spend all of it with my boyfriend, my dogs, my family and my friends. Thank you for reading and considering me as a tutor!
I instruct students from ages 4+ of all ranks for Ju Jitsu. I also have private tutored students and have held self-defense seminars.
What a help! — My daughter was having a very hard time in Spanish. She had missed some school due to health issues, and was having difficulty keeping up. She was getting further and further behind and things were starting to look hopeless. Thank goodness we found Felicia! She was so patient and helpful with my daughter. She was instrumental in my daughter's success in Spanish this year. I HIGHLY recommend her. ...
