Are you planning a trip to China or Taiwan for business, study or just pleasure travel? Would you like to really enjoy exotic cities like Beijing, Taipei and Shanghai? Then why not enhance your journey to these fascinating places by learning Chinese before you go?
I can help you learn basic language skills which will allow you to converse with the local people you meet; and make your journey more comfortable and more rewarding.
My style is relaxed, interactive and student focused. Together, we review your travel goals and create a study plan to achieve those goals. I adjust the pace and purpose of your studies to help you quickly develop speaking and comprehension skills to meet your needs.
It's amazing how much Chinese you will learn in a very short time. I have traveled, lived and studied in both Taiwan and China. I can help you have a very successful trip for either business or pleasure.
If you are having trouble with English speaking, reading or comprehension, I can also help. I have helped foreign students in ESL and ABE (Adult Basic Ed) improve their understanding of English grammar and usage.
Working together on pronunciation, will help build your confidence and help you progress faster. If you want to improve your English speaking, reading and comprehension skills, please contact me.
I began my Mandarin Chinese studies in 1966 after enlisting in the US Air Force. I attended the Basic Chinese language course at the National Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. After graduation, I attended a Chinese Translator course at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, TX. Upon completion, I received an overseas assignment to Taipei, Taiwan. I served there as a Chinese Interpreter for 3 years. After my discharge, I began working for Northwest Airlines in Seattle, WA as a customer service rep/Chinese interpreter. I continued working in that capacity for over 35 years in other cities including SFO, MSP and PHL. Throughout my long airline career, I've helped thousands of foreign travelers in need of language assistance.
While working at SFO, I graduated in 1980 from San Francisco State University with a BA in International Relations. My major was Chinese language, politics and culture. I've also completed Chinese study abroad classes, in Beijing, with the University of Pennsylvania while stationed in PHL.
My experiences with ESL/ESOL tutoring comes from my volunteer work at the Delaware County Literacy Council in the Philadelphia area. I work as a tutor for this organization in a one-on-one capacity to assist students in reading and comprehension. Many of my students are Asian with limited English language abilities. My knowledge of Chinese has been a valuable asset at times, but I mainly focus on helping the student improve their English skills. I have also worked as an ESL substitute teacher for (K-12) classes in local schools districts for the last 3 years.
