I began tutoring clinical biology and social science in undergraduate school and continued through graduate school.
I had an extremely rewarding and meaningful career in education in combined years of high school and college teaching. Subjects designed and developed in curriculum and practice included English and a Second Language, history, philosophy, psychology, economics, biology, and social science.
Several years of work in the Governor's Office of Pennsylvania, 4 years of honorable service in the United States Marine Corps and time spent in private industry are included my overall work experience
I have two daughters, one a young but accomplished physician and a younger daughter still in her public school years. Education has been in my family for generations and is a driving force for my drive for excellence.
Philosophy of Education
Tutoring becomes a meaningful educational experience when the student is able to learn effectively. Learning should not be a painful experience but an experience of challenge, effort, discovery, and accomplishment. Each student's experience learning is always a small part of a larger whole.
Discovering a new talent for reading, studying, learning, and organization can be a life altering experience for any student confronted with the sometimes overwhelming process of "learning." Learning is a lifelong process so gaining skills early will provide satisfying rewards for many years ahead.
Twenty five years of athletic coaching has complemented so much of my educational history. I am available for consultation on a child's education and interplay with athletics, both in the classroom and on the court and playing field.
I played basketball in youth organizations, was selected for all-star and inter-county league play. I played all through junior high school, United States Marine Corps intramurals, as well as intramurals through college. I have coached ages 7 through 18, designed and organized community organized league play, designed age appropriate practice systems and technical play design. I last coached as a AAAA boys varsity assistant in Harrisburg, PA.
My biblical studies background includes theology and literature complementing in depth study of both Old and New Testaments. I have a broad understanding of religion and its social function throughout civilization. I have concentrated studies on individuals central to western Christianity such as C.S. Lewis and Martin Buber. I concentrated on the Gospels and Epistles in both college and Theological School at Drew University.
I counseled and taught both ESOL and regular education students for over 5 years in career and college preparation writing and course selection.
I taught and counseled general education students for 3+ as adjunct instructor in social science for major and minor selection and transfer choices.
I have worked with student athletes for over 10 years in academic plans, course selection and academic performance.
I tutored on the collegiate level and worked with students assistance programs throughout my undergraduate education.
I worked closely with the dean of my college in remedial education for select students.
My training in elementary age students is irregular but from a professional and solid foundation. I grew up helping my mother who taught 5th grade and was the district math cooordinator in an engaging and formative way. I concentrated my undergraduate psychology studies on child development, learning modalities and attitude and social formation. Most particularly, I raised two daughters, the older a physician and the younger a spirited 3rd grader. I have read Coles, Erickson, Brunner and countless more but feel my life is a testement to my skill and commitment to education children
I have played and coached combined years totaling over 30 seasons as a player and coach. Speaking in front of 20-30 semi-interested listeners, hoping to motivate them to not only pay attention but to possible ingest and process that which you are saying, is the daily challenge of good teaching. For over ten years this was my life. Additionally, I have had the opportuntiy to speak to chuches and church groups in a rewarding and satisfying process. I have coached for over 20 years which is a unique form of organization, motivation, and comunication aimed at a unique goal. And I must say incredibly rewarding. Public speaking may simply be consider one of the most significant professional and personal skills I have aquired and use daily.
I include in all my course preparation and presentation study and test taking skills specific to each course. I will lead appropriate classes through practice in formalized exams such as Regents and SAT to maximize learning, performance and application. My understanding of religion in human civilization has a strong basis in Christianity as well as a growing awareness and competence in mid-eastern religions of Judaism and Islam. Additionally I have acquired skills of social and psychological analysis of religion that is both supported and engaged by my study and observation of all religions I have learned to know, eastern and western alike. The social political functions of religion is probably the most demanding and alive perspective today in the discipline of religious studies. This is an ongoing challenge.
