Harvard University (Enrolled)
I am a Princeton University graduate with an A.B. with honors in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. I also attended Harvard's Health Careers Program and have been working as a teaching fellow at Harvard Extension School and Harvard Summer School. I will be starting at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in the fall. I have been tutoring students (ages ranging from 5-22) for over 10 years in subjects including, but not limited to, SAT/ACT prep, math, biology, chemistry, study skills and French. All of my students have seen drastic improvements in their grades and/or standardized testing scores. As part of WyzAnt, I am interested in tutoring SAT/ACT preparation, as well as middle school and high school level math, biology, English, study skills and college application advice. I am willing to provide my high school and college level GPAs in addition to ACT and SAT scores to those interested.
As a person who thrives on intellectual stimulation, I love nothing more than sharing my interests in learning with others. I become personally invested in the success of all of my students and thoroughly enjoy the satisfaction my students express upon mastery of a subject. I recognize that each student is unique and my priority is to understand both a student's strengths and weaknesses and to utilize their strengths to overcome any challenges posed by the material. I am a very creative person, and I am not afraid to think outside the box to present the material in new ways.
My schedule is flexible, and I am willing to travel to a public location for tutoring sessions (e.g., public library, coffee house). I am also available for online tutoring. My baseline rate is $80/hour. Prices are negotiable.
On a more personal note, I love biology and field work and especially love studying animal behavior. I thoroughly enjoy traveling, wildlife photography, theater, piano and playing tennis. Highly knowledgeable in her tutoring subjects, patient by nature and methodical in her approach to tutoring, Christina possesses the right combination of attributes of an excellent tutor. She was quick in figuring out my kids' areas of weakness and set about addressing those gaps in a manner that is both interesting and appropriately challenging for them. Christina went way beyond the call of duty by offering insights that would be beneficial to the kids in their future endeavors. I am extremely satisfied with the progress that my children have made during the six-week period of tutoring by Christina. Christina has given my kids a tremendous confidence boost as they prepare for their subsequent academic challenges.
Christina is very competent, reliable, organized, and patient. Christina guided my son through the application and admission process. She has provided valuable advice. My son's confidence has increased and his essay writing is on the different level now. My son and I are grateful to Christina for sharing her knowledge with us.
Christina did a fantastic job helping me out. When she would come to our sessions, she would have notes and problems ready. There was no idle time wasted during our sessions. I felt like I was getting every pennies worth of attention.
Christina was very easy to contact. She was always at our sessions on time, actually she was there before me.
Christina is the ultimate professional who takes her tutoring services very seriously. She is highly organized, efficient and thorough. She is also very pleasant, a good listener and truly wants your child to succeed. I would highly recommend her, especially for SAT prep.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been working as a college counselor for a few years. I help students with all aspects of the college counseling process including selecting specific schools to apply to, determining which extra-curricular activities and leadership positions to highlight, helping them choose a subject for their personal statement and aiding with any questions regarding the application itself. All of my students have been accepted by one of their three top choice institutions, including Ivy League schools such as Brown and the University of Pennsylvania.
I have tutored elementary school level math and reading to four previous students, all between 2-4th grade. I have passed the WyzAnt subject certifications for elementary math and elementary science. When teaching younger students, I spend a lot of time trying to get to know the students and exactly what aspects of basic concepts that are difficult for them to comprehend. I then use creative methods and hands-on teaching approaches to help the students grasp the concepts via real-world applications. For example, when teaching students basic addition and subtraction principles, I use marbles to illustrate the concept. It's a way of both teaching the necessary concepts and making math fun for both tutor and student!
I have worked as a Teaching Fellow at Harvard University for several introductory organic chemistry courses at both Harvard Extension School and Harvard Summer School. I have also been approved by the professors of these courses as a recommended academic tutor for the course and have previously worked full-time in this position.
I recognize that every student has different strengths, I utilize individualized learning styles to help make organic chemistry as accessible as possible. As a result, my students have seen tremendous improvements in both their understanding of the material and their course performance.
