My deep commitment to excellent teaching and tutoring was developed through my experiences helping others prepare for courses, being a student myself, and as a teacher. I have taught advanced reading and writing to learners of English, French language courses at the introductory levels, and I have given guest lectures in a handful of upper-division, content-based French courses to a diverse group of students (majors and non-majors from all across the university). In addition, all throughout my undergraduate and graduate coursework, I have worked one-on-one with both classmates and other students. My teaching methods in any course or tutoring relationship views teaching as a type of apprenticeship and focuses on a balance between contextualized, hands-on practice, the freedom for creativity, and providing a solid foundation. In addition, when teaching French, I continually look for opportunities to incorporate authentic materials and my knowledge of contemporary French culture, which has developed through personal study and extended residential experience in France. My students and mentors alike have often praised my passion for language teaching, my genuine interest in student development and success, and the effectiveness of my methods in the classroom.
I specialize in tutoring French, ESL, writing, and other communication skills (such as public speaking). I have a PhD in Second Language Acquisition with a specialization in French sociolinguistics.
I have a PhD in second language acquisition and, therefore, have thoroughly studied language learning, language teaching, and linguistics. In addition, I am a native English speaker who has experience teaching advanced reading and writing to learners of English.
I have taught French at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh for three years, and I have a PhD in second language acquisition where I have thoroughly studied and conducted research on language learning, language teaching, and French sociolinguistics.
I have worked as a proofreader off and on throughout my undergraduate and graduate career, most recently proofreading a handful of dissertations for fellow graduate students. In addition, my graduate education in applied linguistics and second language acquisition has both improved my eye for detail and my own writing skills.
In addition to extensively working on my own writing skills throughout my graduate career (I have a PhD) and publications, I have also formally taught a writing course to international university students (titled Reading and Writing in an Academic Context) and informally worked with friends and colleagues on proofreading and editing their dissertations and theses.
