I am a botanical illustrator and mathematician. With that unusual combination, I've spent a lot of my life explaining math to art people and art to math people. The stereotype that artists don't do math well doesn't apply to me, but it has given me a lot of experience in finding new ways to explain and teach math for people who think differently. This is especially useful for students who don't like math or are having trouble in the transitional math subjects like algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. This carries over to the sciences, especially chemistry, which is heavily algebra-based.

I have a B.S. in Mathematics and I tend toward more rule-based and algebraic math. I can tutor for any middle to lower level college math classes and any high school math classes, except statistics, which is not my cup of tea. My B.A. came with heavy coursework in biology and some in chemistry and botany. I love all kinds of science, including physics and chemistry. This wide range of knowledge lets me draw on many examples and modes of thinking, so that I can connect concepts for my students. Many times, all a student needs to solve a problem or understand a concept is the right way to think about it.

As an artist, I paint with acrylic and watercolor paints. I draw with pen and ink, graphite, and charcoal. I work digitally and can tutor the use of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. I am a professional artist with a B.A. in Scientific Illustration. I teach workshops and sell my art. I have spent plenty of time learning and analyzing the different parts and pieces of an image, from anatomy to composition to color, and can easily teach and critique.

I prefer to tutor in person in one or two hour blocks. I find that most students start to lose focus after about two hours, and also that tutoring in person is more effective. I am willing to travel up to half an hour to my students. Potential students who are farther away are welcome to meet me halfway.

My daughter and Lauren are a perfect fit! My daughter indicated that Lauren's method of teaching Algebra 1 was much easier to understand than the method that is being taught by her teacher. She completed her Algebra homework after her tutoring session and seemed more confident. She looks forward to the next tutoring session with Lauren. I really like Lauren's personality as well, and her price is affordable. My daughter mentioned that Lauren was so good with teaching her Algebra 1 and did not make her feel intimidated. This is music to my ears to see my daughter so happy with her tutor. She may now begin to not hate Algebra 1. Thank you Lauren!

Great with Math. She's very patient and breaks the math down and makes it look very simple. I highly recommend her to anybody.

Excellent tutor. Punctual, patient, easy to work with. Relates very well with high school students prepping for PSAT and SAT.

Lauren was very helpful with helping me understand a very difficult subject. Going in depth in explaining to me the fundamentals of Algebra II finally gave me a better feel for the class. Although I started out slow, as soon as Lauren began teaching me I became more efficient and progressive with my coursework. If I had to recommend someone to a tutor, the first person I would think of is Lauren.

Lauren is very patient and helped me to reach my goals. She always arrived on time and was easy to reach by email or phone. I would highly recommend her for Lauren is very skilled in many fields.

Lauren has helped both my daughters improve on their test scores. She is highly motivated, patient, and loves what she does. She has flexible hours throughout the week. She is prompt. Highly recommended.

Approved subjects are in **bold**.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I work with Adobe Illustrator to create charts, diagrams, and images for myself and for professional work. I've been working with this program since 2010.

Adobe Photoshop is my most used image tool. I use it to edit my photographs and scanned images, to create diagrams, and to make images from scratch. I am very familiar with Adobe Photoshop and can work in any version from 7.0 to CS5.

Algebra 1 is one of my most tutored subjects. As the first real introduction into many higher math concepts, it's essential that students understand Algebra 1. I can explain the concepts using many different methods. Since every student learns differently, it's necessary to individualize the explanations so that the student can understand the material. I am used to bridging those gaps.

The trio of algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2 is where many students have trouble in their math career. I am very familiar with algebra and how it works, and I can help students understand the sometimes difficult concepts. The concepts covered here are essential to completing other math and science courses.

I have a background in a variety of biology, including coursework in advanced subjects like anatomy and genetics. As a scientific illustrator, my job is to convey information in a clear and understandable manner. This carries over to tutoring, where I can make even complex biological concepts clear with patient explanation and on-the-spot diagrams.

As a scientific Illustrator, botany, zoology, and genetics were all essential parts of my education. We learned a broad base of science so that we could understand anything we were called upon to draw. I love learning about plants and animals, and did very well in these classes.

I took AP Calculus BC in high school and continued my education with Calculus at college. One of the advantages of learning higher level math (such as differential equations and real analysis) is that it gives you a much better perspective of the basic math and the underlying structure and foundation.

Chemistry is essential to understanding biology and other sciences, but it's often a stumbling block for students. Chemistry is heavy on both memorization and math. A good working understanding of algebra is essential, and as a math tutor, I am well qualified to help with mathematical concepts.

Differential Equations are a standard part of higher math education. I aced this class at Arcadia University. Differential equations lie right in my area of interest, which is chaos theory. Consequently, I have studied them in and out of class and used them for my undergraduate thesis.

Both Discrete and Finite math are covered by a standard higher level mathematics education. The topics are covered in many courses, including graph theory, topology, and combinatorics. I aced my math courses at Arcadia University and took a variety of math courses that cover this subject.

I have a B.A. in scientific illustration. I have been drawing all my life and regard drawing skills as one the the most basic and fundamental skills in my "toolbox." Over the years and through my degree program, I have improved my drawing and experienced many critiques.

Drawing is a skill developed from observation and understanding of form, line, shape, and volume. It is very important for most kinds of artwork. Drawing is really a practice-based skill, and with all art effective critique is essential. I have years and years of experience in doing and critiquing art from the most basic level up to fully professional art, and I can help you learn.

Both Discrete and Finite math are covered by a standard higher level mathematics education. The topics are covered in many courses, including graph theory, topology, and combinatorics. I aced my math courses at Arcadia University and took a variety of math courses that cover this subject.

I am fluent in both Mac and PC. I've used PC (windows) computers for over ten years. I use predominantly Windows XP and 7 and have not used Windows 8 yet. On Macs, I am familiar with Mac OSX. I've used a Mac laptop for the last 5 years and Macintosh desktop computers as well. I can use tablet and smartphone devices as well. I am very patient and can help people who want to learn computers, even people with no experience at all. I tailor my lessons to the skill level of the student.

As a scientific Illustrator, botany, zoology, and genetics were all essential parts of my education. In addition to biology 101, I also took a genetics course and a human genetics and development course that dealt exclusively with embryonic genetics. I did very well in all of these classes, which makes sense because I love learning about how things work!

Geometry is one of my most tutored subjects. As a visual thinker, I excel in explaining concepts different ways, to find which way helps the student most. Geometry is often where students have trouble because the concepts are presented differently. I can help bridge that gap.

Geometry is also where students first encounter proofs. I have a great deal of experience with helping students with proofs. My step-by-step methods help students understand how to plan and create a proof.

I am a native speaker of English and can explain grammar and spelling concepts. I have excellent grammar and spelling myself, and am very patient when teaching to others.

I have a B.S. in Mathematics from Arcadia University. I got an A+ in linear algebra and abstract algebra. I spent a lot of time helping the other students with their homework and in understanding the concepts.

Consequently, I am well-prepared to help students learn the various parts of algebra, from proofs to dealing with spaces. I am particularly good with proofs, which are generally a problem area for math students. I am quite familiar with vector spaces, proofs, and matrices.

I have worked with Microsoft Excel for over 10 years. I use it for budgets, graphing, printing labels among other things. I have helped many people from the most basic computer skill level up to quite advanced and can tailor my teaching style to your needs.

I have worked with Microsoft Powerpoint for over 10 years. I use it for my presentations, from classes to conference audiences. I have helped many people from the most basic computer skill level up to quite advanced and will tailor my teaching style to your needs.

I have worked with Microsoft Word for over 10 years. I use it all the time for typing and basic typography, such as signs and announcements. I have helped many people from the most basic computer skill level up to quite advanced and will tailor my teaching style to your needs.

In particular, I can help write letters and resumes. I can proofread and help edit papers and essays.

I have a B.A. in scientific illustration. I was very effective in critiques and frequently assisted the other students in my classes. I've been painting with acrylic paint for over 10 years and it is one of my primary media.

As a trained scientific illustrator, acrylic paint is a major medium for me. I can teach its uses, its advantages and disadvantages, and how to use it. I can teach glazes and washes, along with the color theory necessary to take proper advantage of acrylic paint's translucency (or lack thereof).

In my own time, I paint both abstract and realistic work, so I can help teach the techniques to artists aimed in almost any direction.

I have a B.A. in Scientific Illustration from Arcadia University. I do all my own photography for reference photographs. I've been using digital cameras for over ten years, and for the last few I have used a DSLR. I have also done black and white film photography and developed the film and paper myself.

With my DSLR, I use manual settings, and I photograph a variety of things. As an artist, I can assist with both the artistic and the technical side of photography.

Photography is fantastic in and of itself, but it's also an essential tool for many artists for taking reference images. I take hundreds of reference images and can assist with scientific, stock, and reference photography.

As an artist, I also take photographs for art and creative purposes. I can teach the mechanical operation of cameras, both digital and film, from the simple point-and-click to the DSLR. The artistic ideas behind photography spread across the other artistic disciplines. I can teach about focus, depth of field, exposure, blur, color design, composition, transferring images to the computer and the use of photoshop to gently improve and clean up images.

This area of math is the stepping stone from concrete math (addition and multiplication) to more abstract math. Many kids get lost on this step. Every child learns differently, so it is essential to explain math in a way they understand. I am used to bridging the gap, and I can explain math in many different ways.

I took precalculus in High School and have since then gone on to get a B.S. in math. One of the advantages of learning higher level math is that it gives you a greater depth of understanding of the basic stuff. It wasn't too long ago I took high school math myself, so I still remember how it was to learn it.

I am a native speaker of English with excellent grammar and spelling. I can help out with editing for both style and content. In particular, I can help out with essays, research papers, math papers, letters, and resumes.

Trigonometry is usually very scary to students, since it brings back bad memories of geometry. Like with geometry, my skill at explaining concepts many different ways, especially visually, helps students a great deal. Trigonometry is essential to science and disciplines like physics, architecture, and engineering, so it is very important that students learn it correctly.
