Ph.D. Biochemistry, Multi-Disciplinary Ed & Res, Student Mentoring

Hi all, my name is David, and I think you'll find that my teaching style is both comfortable and productive.

While I am currently enrolled at Westminster Theological Seminary in the MDiv. Pastoral Track, I have been working full-time as a Research Biochemist/Biophysicist in the area of Structural Biology. This field of study requires that I have a full grasp of the Biology, Chemistry, Physiology, Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry applied to Biological Systems, etc. It also includes working knowledge of mathematics and computer science. I have written a number of peer-reviewed articles for international journals and am in the process of writing others. I am also a non-fiction writer and have just finished publishing my first book entitled, "A Chord in Time." As such, my writing, editing, and language arts skills must be reasonably polished.

One of my distinctions as a Research scientist is that I have chosen to mentor High School and College students in the Laboratory setting as a means of "cultivating career interests." This has proven profitable for a number of students in that it either confirms or refutes what they 'think' their academic and career options are 'supposed to be.' The advantage is that they are now working toward a career with specific goals in mind. I truly do enjoy working with younger as well as older students because I enjoy the interaction and marvel at the results. I am also very patient in my teaching and recognize that there are a variety of learning modes.

I have also been a Teaching Faculty member in which I have taught subjects such as Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Human Physiology, Biophysics, and structural biology. As a result of my background, I do present a versatile teaching skill set and have a highly interactive teaching mode... while not exactly the same as "Bill Nye the Science Guy," it's something like his enthusiastic approach to science and mathematics.

As an added bonus, I do have a multi-user Skype account which allows me to interact with multiple individuals where their subject interests are aligned and also have a 4 x 6 whiteboard mounted in my office specifically for the purpose of teaching.

Biology

My background is that of a research Biochemist and Biophysicist where the biology of a cell and its surroundings is integral to its life and function.

The Microsoft suite of writing, spreadsheet, and Power Point Presentation have represented the cornerstone of much of my career pursuits as well as maintenance of personal information, etc. In the same way that many people understand the various facets of computer games, I have come to know and explore the facets of these various programs so that I can gain access to the benefits they offer to me in my career and personal life applications.

Microsoft Word

The writing potion of the Microsoft suite of Office programs has represented the cornerstone of much of my career pursuits as well as maintenance of personal information, etc. My career as a Pastor and Scientist requires a vast amount of writing and editing. Additionally, as a writer of fiction and non-fiction books, I utilize Microsoft Word and all of its benefits to augment my writing style.

Writing

In terms of writing and reading, I am currently a Seminary student at Westminster Theological Seminary. I am also a Pastor and Research Biochemist. All of these activities require that I have accomplished a graduate level of reading and writing skill. I have published book chapters and scientific publications. Biochemistry

My Ph.D. and training are in the biochemistry and biophysics of membrane bound protein structure and function. I have developed Biochemistry assays and tools for making measurements on very small volumes of materials as well as developing assays for various biochemical substances.

Adobe Photoshop

My professional and artistic needs require a proficiency in Adobe Photoshop so that I can obtain the quality images needed for the job I am attempting to perform.

My photography work involves manipulation of the image quality such that I can obtain the depth of color or B&W schemes that I want to augment the photograph before mounting.

For my research science, I was taking images on an electron microscope and using Photoshop to create publication quality images.

Elementary Science

As a research scientist for many years, my main interests in life have been the pursuit of understanding the elementary principles behind scientific observations. It's been a fascination for me since I was in Junior High School and extends now through my career in science as both a scientist and educator.

Baseball

I have played baseball at the little league level, collegiate level and sub-professional levels for varying amounts of time mostly as a Catcher and also infielder (short stop and second base).

Bible Studies

As an Ordained Pastor, and now Seminary student, I have done a great deal of Bible study. I am very strong in both Old and New Testament theology and the redemptive-historical development of the Lord's bringing to himself a People of his own through faith as well as reclaiming nature from the curse of the fall

Public Speaking

First of all, I am a Pastor and, hence, do public speaking on a regular basis. Secondly, as an academician, I have been a lecturer at several universities teaching a variety of course materials. Thirdly, as a Research Biochemist/Biophysicist, I have given research talks at National Conferences for both the Biophysical and Crystallographic Societies. Just recently, I gave a talk in the Biomolecular Science Department at the Imperial College of London on Protein Structural Biology.

Organic Chemistry

As a Research Biochemist, I utilize the principles of Organic Chemistry on a regular basis since these same organic processes are utilized within a cellular system to generate appropriate stereo-chemical components necessary for function. In the cell physiological world, enzymes play the role of catalyst and generation of proper enantiomeric conformations for the various compounds that are synthesized for function.
