I have a Bachelor of Education degree from West Chester University(1983)in Special Education, and a Masters of Education from Gratz College (1998).

Proudly, I taught for the Philadelphia School District for 16 years in various Learning Support classes. Simultaneously, I taught Hebrew School and helped prepare students for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs.

Because of a disability I had to retire early from the school district, but still have my passion for teaching.

I am highly motivating and inspiring to all my students, giving them the confidence they need to become independent, critical thinkers. I find each student's learning style and teach to his-her strength without ignoring any weakness.

Phonics

As a tutor, I will teach my student what is asked of me. However, when working with a 'typical' elementary or middle school student, I like to perform a diagnostic reading and/or math evaluation initially. In doing this, I have a solid baseline of where my student 'is' what are his/her strengths and weaknesses. While I think it's important to have a strong sight word vocabulary, having poor skills in phonics is often the roadblock to poor reading.

Study Skills

Teaching good study skills has a few basic components that are the same at any grade level.

These components are: time management; organization; and having the necessary supplies to study. for a young student,these may include his notebook, mathbook, glue, scissors, crayons, and pencil sharpener. I taught Hebrew school for 20 years and teach Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation including Torah and Haftarah blessings, trop, prayers to lead a typical service using traditional tunes.

ADD/ADHD

During my more than 20 years of teaching students with various learning disabilities, I have encountered many with ADD/ADHD. My son has ADHD. Therefore, my experience personally and professionally has helped me to become quite skilled at using behavior modification techniques to help manage students' behavior so that they can learn with the least amount of distraction.
