With a love and passion for words and the way they are put together, it was only natural that I decided to earn my BA in Creative Writing. What surprises people is that, when I decided to have a second major, I decided to study Mathematics. To me, it still makes complete sense. Math and logic relax me, presenting problems that have only one answer that must be discovered. I hope to continue to share my love of both Math and Writing throughout my life.

Algebra 1

Solving for x has brought me joy and lent me relaxation since I learned in 7th grade that every x had a specific and special value. I completely enjoy passing this feeling on to others.

Grammar

Grammar changes and fluctuates with usage. This can be both challenging and helpful. It can make gaining initial comprehension more difficult, but can also cause idiomatic alterations to seem natural and intuitive. Looking into the layout and structure of stories and sentences is something I love sharing and discussing with others.

Prealgebra

While still in preschool, my father introduced me to counting, flash cards, and playing with shapes. To me, it was the most fun game we played (and my father was one to play anything from hide and seek to Candyland). Math has continued to be a fun and relaxing activity for me. X always has a solution, and finding it can bring the rest of life into perspective.

Reading

The solution to increased reading comprehension often returns to finding a way to identify with an aspect of story. I find the best tool for improving this is reading a book of interest as a team, discussing, on the way, various aspects of story, plot, and structure.

Writing

Creating stories and arranging words together has been something that I can remember enjoying as far back as the third grade. My teacher had each of us write a story for an annual collection to be distributed to all parents. My passion for words has continued to grow. It has led me to the completion of a BA in Creative Writing, acting as editor in chief for the College's Literary Magazine, running consistent writing workshops, tutoring others, and more.

English

Growing up I pursued words and language with an avid, unstoppable passion that landed me consistently in advanced classes. In middle school I began staying late or coming early to assist other students with essays or reading comprehension. I found that I liked this habit and continue to tutor others in English today.

GED

While in high school, I loved to study with other students. I usually didn't need to study, hearing it in class was often enough, but discussing subjects with others often lent topics new depth. Since then, I have continued to tutor high school students, finding increased depth and comprehension for both of us within the sessions.

SAT Reading

The SATs demand comprehension of stories and articles. For students unaccustomed to reading independently, this can be challenging and intimidating. My love for words and the messages they convey is infectious. I have helped many people improve their reading skills, and have enjoyed each time.

SAT Writing

Finding the natural balance in a sentence clarifies its meaning. For the SAT, students must be prepared to identify the structural parts and overall intention of each sentence. Determining whether the words used have been assembled correctly can be a challenge. It is a challenge I am confident I consistently hep others surmount.

ACT Reading

Detailed comprehension of articles, essays, and stories in a skill I am experienced with building. Like any skill, practicing with increasing success creates the confidence needed to face what might otherwise be an intimidating test.

ACT English

Preparing for tests can be intimidating. I offer my reading, writing, and literature skills to students to help build their confidence and comprehension. I have had a lot of success helping students of all ages improve their English subject skill set.

Elementary Math

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. A sentence that still sticks in my head, reminding me of the mathematical order of operations. Elementary school can present a bevy of challenges academically and socially, both demand learning new structures daily. I hope to pass on positive impressions of these first years of learning, knowing that as I succeed, new generations grow to think of learning and knowledge as things to love and enjoy.

Elementary (K-6th)

Before college, I worked as a TA in an elementary school. For a year, I spent three days a week with 5th grade, and two with kindergarten. During college, I spent many hours as a volunteer tutoring struggling children. I also worked part-time tutoring the children around campus. Passing on the building blocks of knowledge and positive general learning habits is something I have come to enjoy very much.

Drawing

Using shading to creating texture, I have been drawing since I became able to hold a crayon. My parents encouraged my creativity by sending me to classes once a week starting at the age of 6. In high school I stayed hours after each day working with chalk and oil pastels. In college I took several drawing and visual art classes, exploring the various shapes within each vase, tree, or person.

Painting

I have always studied painting. My pursuit began with an after school class at a local art teacher's home in my 5th grade year. I continued to study painting outside of school until I began my college career. During the years I spent at Montclair State University, I studied visual arts, increasing my knowledge, and cementing a passion that I continue to explore and share today.
