Over the years, I have had some students who have made fantastic improvements and a few who made little to no improvements. The only difference is in the students' commitment to working. If your student is not going to try problems independently before they see me, then I am not the tutor for you. Progress is only made if the student is taking responsibility for trying the work first, taking great notes, and having the attitude that improving in math matters to them personally. They should come prepared to show me exactly what they are working on in math and what problems they got wrong or did not know how to start. If they have a teacher who does not let them keep old tests and quizzes, then they need to commit to quickly writing down all the problems they got wrong on their test. This should be done every single time in order to ensure that they can figure out whether the mistake was a concept error or a careless error. Otherwise it will be impossible for me to guess what they have gotten wrong and how they can improve.

With this type of approach, 1 on 1 tutoring a great investment. Everyone has math skills they are weak in that need improving. Once you improve your weaknesses, you have a strong foundation on which you can build your knowledge. I have experience teaching secondary mathematics (7th-12th) as well as some college Mathematics courses.

Rates for tutoring at my home in Williams Twp. (Easton PA 18042):

Mon-Fri 10am -ending by 5:30pm or weekends is $35 an hour

At your home: I have limited hours in the evening: $50 an hour.

For students taking the SAT/ACT: If you do NOT have a study book, please consider purchasing the Collegeboard workbook as I have found it to be the best one since they are the test maker. I have a passion for preparing students for the SAT test since this can lead to huge scholarships! Sometimes I have extra that you can ask about that I purchase off of ebay for about $10 (which is more than half off!).

For the SAT: log onto collegeboard.com and set up an account; get the question of the day sent to your email. Because tutoring can add up to be an expense I encourage students (though not required) to do the practice test on the college board website; use the college board workbook and do some practice tests as possible BEFORE we meet. Then we use the time to go over the questions that were missed or skipped. I recommend (though not required) using a TI-83 plus or TI-84 (or higher) graphing calculator. Also, when the students are signed up for the test, please try to pay the extra $20 or so to get their specific results so that they will get a copy of the test booklet and their specific results with answers. The math included does not go beyond Algebra 2.

Note, on the SAT, you are penalized for wrong multiple choice answers. So, you should only answer a multiple choice question if you can narrow it down to 2 answers. On the student response section, answer all of them because you are not penalized for a wrong answer.

For the ACT: you should go to act.org and try their practice test. This test has a science section and you are NOT penalized for wrong answers. Therefore, answer every single question. The mathematics is a bit more straight forward than the SAT, however there is some trigonometry in addition to the Alg 2. I would highly recommend taking this test in addition to the SAT!

Please call ASAP so that together we can help your student build a solid foundation in math. So many college majors require higher mathematics. Students should not have to limit their dreams because of a lack of foundation in mathematics. Start 1 on 1 tutoring today!

When she mentioned about functioning, I asked for the student to show me what exactly she meant in her textbook or notes. She could not find any examples in her textbook or her notes of what she meant. So, I tried to come up with some things that I thought she meant. She said that she understood those things. So, I then asked her to try to get her teacher to let her borrow back her midterm so that she could write down what she did not get correct. I really wanted to figure out what it was she got wrong in the past so that it would not happen again.
In the meantime, for me to access her Algebra II skills, and since she had the SAT tests in a few weeks, I felt it was appropriate since she had nothing to show me that she struggled with, to look ahead at what she was starting next in class and review and see where her skills were since all the topics are also in Algebra II. Sometimes when you look ahead it reveals what past skills are lacking that you need to use.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 for over 10 years. I have several worksheets developed to help students gain confidence.

Algebra 2

I love teaching Algebra 2! I have methods that I would love to share that enable you to check your answers so that you can know you are correct. I really enjoy teaching students new ways in which they can use their graphing calculators (TI-83 plus or higher). While we are studying Alg 2 we can work on other skills needed for the SAT test.

Geometry

Advanced Geometry was the course in college that I really excelled in since I am a visual learner. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoy the visual problems that involve algebra. Proofs are the other aspect of Geometry. They are also important, so I will help your student think logically so that they understand the order in which they need to order their proof statements.

Prealgebra

Pre-Algebra is an important stepping stone to lay a solid foundation for the rest of your students mathematics. I know what is involved in Alg1, 2 and beyond so I teach Pre-Algebra with the future in mind so that they can make the future connections. Students need repetition so encourage your student to do as many different typed of problems for the same skill so that they can experience all the aspects of that skill. I would visit websites that have interactive games to reinforce skills. Upon our first contact I will give you the names of websites I recommend.

SAT Math

Preparing students for the SAT is so satisfying because when the scores improve everyone is so thankful. THe hard work and hours to prepare really pays off in scholarships! You need to expose yourself to a large amount of SAT math problems. Make certain you do the practice test. When we meet I will give you 4 worksheets of 25 problems. I have taken the most popular problems and divided them into their 4 different categories so that you can see the similarities within each discipline. You need to time yourself when you are practicing the tests to achieve the speed needed to make quick decisions on how to start the problems.

Incredibly Helpful! — My daughter had a "graded" Honors Algebra Packet due the first day of school, summer assignment, that she (my daughter) was frustrated and in tears over due to lack of understanding/teaching method from her previous teacher. Happy to report, Tina S., helped my daughter in a most amazing way in a couple hour tutoring session, her "graded" summer assignment was returned with a grade of 96.5%. Tina ...
