Do to limited time & the serious need to exercise and lose about 80 pounds ASAP, I am currently only taking:
Alg 1 or 2 homeschooled students/adult students studying for entrance tests that can meet during the daytime (ending by 3pm) OR a few afterschool students at my home that are studying for the SAT/ACT college entrance tests that can meet at my home afterschool.
It was a hard decision to cut back, but I feel that I am most effective in helping people prepare for entrance tests and with Alg 1 & 2.
1 on 1 tutoring is a great investment! Everyone has skills they are weak in that need improving. Once you improve your weaknesses, you are ready.
Rates: Daytime Mon-Fri 9am-ending by 3pm is $25 an hour
Mon-Fri 3pm-5:30pm or weekends is $30 an hour
For students taking the SAT/ACT: If you do NOT have a study book, please consider purchasing the Collegeboard workbook as I have found it to be the best one since they are the test maker. I have a passion for preparing students for the SAT test since this can lead to huge scholarships! Sometimes I have extra that you can ask about.
For the SAT: log onto collegeboard.com and set up an account; get the question of the day sent to your email. Because tutoring can add up to be an expense I encourage students (though not required) to do the practice test on the college board website; use the college board workbook and do some practice tests as possible BEFORE we meet. Then we use the time to go over the questions that were missed or skipped. I recommend (though not required) using a TI-83 plus or TI-84 (or higher) graphing calculator. Also, when the students are signed up for the test, please try to pay the extra $20 or so to get their specific results so that they will get a copy of the test booklet and their specific results with answers. The math included does not go beyond Algebra 2.
Note, on the SAT, you are penalized for wrong multiple choice answers. So, you should only answer a multiple choice question if you can narrow it down to 2 answers. On the student response section, answer all of them because you are not penalized for a wrong answer.
For the ACT: you should go to act.org and try their practice test. This test has a science section and you are NOT penalized for wrong answers. Therefore, answer every single question. The mathematics is a bit more straight forward than the SAT, however there is some trigonometry in addition to the Alg 2. I would highly recommend taking this test in addition to the SAT!
Please call ASAP so that together we can help your student build a solid foundation in math. So many college majors require higher mathematics. Students should not have to limit their dreams because of a lack of foundation in mathematics. Start 1 on 1 tutoring today!
