As an avid traveler, I have been inspired by the importance of verbal communication in every country in all the world. I have dedicated my studies to learning other languages, initially by studying abroad in Italy as a teenager and then by expanding those horizons further by studying Arabic and Middle Eastern Politics in Amman, Jordan. However, every time I study another language I grow closer to my own native language: English. I am increasingly interested in reading and writing in English. Through my current position working at a small non-profit adult literacy organization, I have discovered a new passion: teaching English to speakers of other languages. I have tutored Iraqis and Russians toward their ultimate goal of U.S. citizenship but they are just the most recent students that I have worked with. For the past 5 years, I have worked with small groups and individuals to meet whatever their goals may be. In the last 9 months alone I have tutored students on Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Study Skills, Arabic, and English.
The other core of my life experience has been dedicated to making and experiencing music. I was raised in a musical family and never went to bed at night without the piano lulling me to sleep. Music is in my bones and has led me to study voice privately. I have taken many music courses and have excelled especially at Music History and Sightsinging and Ear Training classes.
I strongly believe that each student brings a unique set of skills to the learning process. I approach each student differently but hold at the core of my tutoring methods the importance of responding to the needs of the individual. I like to go about sessions in an organized fashion and typically set goals for both our session as well as for our entire course of meetings.
