Experienced Eng Lit and Writing teacher (award-winning writer)

I am an experienced and passionate English teacher. I currently teach college-level Creative Writing and high school English, and I've been a high school teacher for seven years and a college instructor for 10. My teaching subjects include American Literature, AP English Literature, AP English Language and Composition, Journalism and Creative Writing, as well as Science Writing, basic Composition, and post-Cold War European politics.

For academic work, I specialize in literature and writing, though I can also help with subjects such as social studies and biology and philosophy. Study skills are important to me: I help students learn to read faster, remember what they read, and improve their comprehension and literary analysis skills. I have many tips to help my students manage their time, overcome procrastination, take quality notes, and become lifelong learners.

I especially like to help students with college application essays, SAT essays, and academic papers. My own writing has been published in prominent literary journals and I have also won writing awards (I also have two books out). One of my college essay students got into Harvard (I'm just saying... we worked on her essay for two months, and I love working with students helping them tell their personal stories and shape their essays into sophisticated, memorable pieces that will get the attention of admissions committees).

For SAT prep, I help students master the Writing and Verbal sections, and I have taught and still teach fast-paced, serious SAT classes in a private enrichment academy. My SAT essay class is especially popular, and I help many students who begin the course barely literate in English to write excellent, timed essays.

Reading

Helping my students to become avid readers is one of my goals as a teacher. With wider reading comes increased comprehension and greater appreciation of the written word. Reading is a joy, and this is a lesson I always impart to my students. Remembering what is read is also a secret that I can effectively teach.

Writing

As a professional writer, I teach writing to others of all ages. I can help anyone learn how to be more expressive, clear and creative in writing.

English

My years of experience as an English teacher (American Lit, AP English Language, AP English Literature, creative writing and Journalism) enable me to help students in a wide variety of grades. I love to discuss and assign books, and I can teach anyone how to be a more effective writer.

Literature

Literature is my passion, and as an experienced Literature teacher at both the high school and college level (I also help middle schoolers in tutoring sessions), I have the skills and the background to help all my students understand what they read and learn how to write effective papers about works of literature.

SAT Writing

Teaching the SAT essay is one of the things I do best. I have also worked as an SAT essay grader. Therefore, I know the secrets to success on the SAT essay and the SAT writing multiple-choice questions!

Philosophy

I was a Philosophy major in college, and I love to help students understand the big ideas in life.

PSAT

Not only do I tutor in the SAT, but I also tutor for the PSAT (of course). I have helped countless students get ready for these standardized tests, and I have had much success and many satisfied customers.

ACT English

I am an experienced ACT tutor and, in fact, have written portions of these exams for ACT.

Study Skills

I have seven years of teaching experience in total, and I always taught study skills to the college freshmen I taught. Learning how to take notes while listening to a lecture or while reading, how to review for a test or exam and how to manage time are issues I always teach. ESL/ESOL

I have worked with many English Language learners (ESL) in the enrichment school where I teach a few times a week. Most of my students are Chinese, Korean, or Indian, although I have also worked with ESL students from Scandinavia. I work on reading comprehension, idioms, homonyms, and other vocabulary, and spend much time explaining how to see writing in English as a predictable process.

College Counseling

I have helped hundreds of high school students decide where to apply to college, how to complete their college essays and other important application questions, and I have pointed many students in the direction of colleges they hadn't known about that turned out to be excellent fits for them.

SAT Reading

I have been tutoring for SAT Verbal sections for several years, helping both advanced and remedial students increase their SAT scores. I know the strategy, and I know what students need to learn and study, and when I take the SAT--as I often do--I always get a top score.
