I have always loved languages and sharing that joy (and effort!) with young people made me decide to become a teacher. I grew up in Europe where the prevailing attitude is that an educated person speaks more than one language. Latin, being the mother of all tongues, was something everybody wanted to learn!
I believe effective language learning comes about when the teacher and student are on the same page. The student has to be willing to give the subject the time and effort it requires and the teacher will teach/mentor and coach.
By being enthusiastic and knowledgeable the tutor will facilitate the student's learning;in this type of one on one education milieu, the student generally wants to do well and achieve his/her goals.
Tutoring homework may be assigned depending on student goals. It is important to develop a plan for tutor, student and parent to decide on the outlines of the sessions. The plan along with input from all parties is generally worked out in the first session. I am also available to assist with homework in between sessions albeit on a limited basis.
Finally, the best results are reached through cooperation. Just as the tutor has to be open with student/parents about issues related to the work, the student or his parents will speak their mind if something is no going well in the tutoring partnership.
