Hi, I'm Dawn, an English teacher, SAT/ACT tutor, and guidance counselor who has over 20 years of experience teaching English and and 8 years of experience doing college counseling and test prep. I have a B.A. in English education, an M.A. in English, and an M.Ed. in School Counseling.

Some things you should know about me...
--I love learning. I love students. I love helping students succeed.
--I'm enthusiastic, creative, and hardworking. Tutoring with me will NOT be boring!
--I'm encouraging, patient and kind, and I respect every student as a special, unique person.
--I can help students in several different areas related to English and language arts:

Reading and vocabulary skills - learn how to figure out the meaning words in context, how to find the meaning of a word you don't know by thinking of a similar word you already know, and how to guess what will happen next in a story or essay.
Grammar skills - Believe it or not, grammar can be fun and it's not as hard as you think!
Writing skills - I have taught hundreds of students how to write with confidence, clarity, and creativity. There's no such thing as an inherently "good writer" or "bad writer." Writing is a skill you can learn through instruction and practice--just like learning how to ride a bicycle or drive a car!

--I also help students prepare for the ACT English test, the SAT critical reading section, and the SAT writing section by showing you how to "brush up" on your English skills and learn effective test-taking strategies. You and I will practice with real test questions and I'll help you step-by-step to a great score on the SAT or ACT!

--I have also been a secondary guidance counselor for 8 years, specializing in all aspects of college counseling:
How to choose a college
How to be accepted to the college or colleges of your choice
How to figure out which major and career are right for you
How to fill out college applications so they make you look good
How to write an outstanding college essay
How to find and get scholarships and other financial aid

Dawn’s subjects

ACT English

I have a Master's degree in English and have taught high school English for over 20 years. I also have a Master's degree in School Counseling and have served as a high school guidance counselor for 8 years. During this time I have taught many students the skills they needed to do well on the ACT English test, including effective test-taking strategies.

The ACT English test contains multiple-choice questions about correcting grammar and usage errors in sentences, as well as recognizing how to improve sentences and paragraphs. Using questions from previous ACT tests, I give students step-by-step instruction in test-taking strategies and review the grammar, usage, and writing knowledge needed to do well on the multiple-choice questions.

ACT Reading

I have a Master's degree in English and have taught high school English for over 20 years. I also have a Master's degree in School Counseling and have served as a high school guidance counselor for 8 years. During this time I have taught many students the skills they needed to do well on the ACT English test, including effective test taking strategies. I greatly enjoy working with students and helping them succeed.

Bible Studies

I have studied the Bible since I was a child, so I have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Bible. I gained this knowledge at home from my father, who was a minister; from Bible courses; and from teaching at religious schools. My 20 years of experience as an English teacher also enhance my teaching of the Bible as literature. My goal is to share my love and enthusiasm for the Bble.

College Counseling

I have a Master's degree in school counseling, and I have been a high school guidance counselor for eight years. During the past few years, I have spent much of my time helping students with the college application process. I have met individually with each of the juniors and seniors at my school, helping them narrow down their college choices, fill out applications, write excellent college essays, prepare for college admission tests, and apply for scholarships. My interaction with these students has helped them gain acceptance to one or more colleges of their choice and obtain significant financial aid. For example, last year's senior class had only 56 students, but these students were offered a total of $3.5 million in scholarships.

English

I have a Master's degree in English and have taught high school English for over 20 years. I have worked with many students who struggle with understanding literature, improving their vocabulary, and learning how to write correctly, confidently, and creatively. Over the past 20 years, I have also helped hundreds of AP English Literature and Composition students get high scores on the national AP Literature & Composition exam, which requires critical reading skills, as well as the ability to write several essays in two hours! I greatly enjoy working with all students, helping them succeed in every aspect of English.

GED

Using questions from previous GED tests, I give students step-by-step instruction in test-taking strategies and review material needed to do well on the multiple-choice questions.

Grammar

I have a Master's degree in English and have taught high school English for over 20 years. Many students find grammar to be especially difficult, so over the years I have developed strategies to help students learn grammar and have fun doing it!

Literature

I have a Master's degree in English and have taught high school English for over 20 years. I am very familiar with the literature studied in middle school and high school language arts and English classes.

My knowledge of literature has been greatly enhanced by my years of experience teaching Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition. My AP students have done very well on the national AP exam in English Literature. They have told me that their English Literature class was the best class they've ever taken and that it greatly helped them in college.

Praxis

I have over 20 years of experience as an English teacher and have a master's degree in English. I was also a guidance counselor for 8 years. Since I had to take both the Praxis I and Praxis II exams in English Literature and School Guidance within the last few years, I am very familiar with the exams. Recently I tutored a person who did well on the Praxis II English exam (see testimonial). I am qualified to teach any Praxis exams related to English, Literature, Language Arts, Reading, and Writing, as well as Secondary Education and Guidance Counselor.

Proofreading

I have a Master's Degree in English and have taught English for more than 20 years. After helping hundreds of students revise their essays for all these years, I've become an expert in proofreading!

I have also taught writing classes at the community college level. Many of my students were adults returning to school. I love to help people improve their writing and language skills.

PSAT

Hi, my name is Dawn. I have a Master's degree in English and have taught high school English for over 20 years. I also have a Master's degree in School Counseling and have served as a high school guidance counselor for 8 years. During this time I have taught many students the skills they needed to do well on the PSAT, including effective test taking strategies. I greatly enjoy working with students and helping them succeed.

Psychology

I have a Master's degree in school counseling and have taken many courses in the psychology field. In addition, I have been a high school guidance counselor for eight years, so I have experience applying psychological concepts in real-world situations.

Reading

I have a Master's degree in English and have taught English for over 20 years. One thing I have emphasized in my English classes is learning how to "read between the lines" and how to understand what the author is saying, as well as the significance of what he or she is NOT saying. These are "critical reading skills" which have helped my students be successful in school and in their careers.

SAT Reading

Hi, my name is Dawn. I have a Master's degree in English and have taught high school English for over 20 years. I also have a Master's degree in School Counseling and have served as a high school guidance counselor for 8 years. During this time I have taught many students the skills they needed to do well on the SAT Reading test, including effective test taking strategies. I greatly enjoy working with students and helping them succeed.

SAT Writing

I have a Master's degree in English and have taught high school English for over 20 years. I also have a Master's degree in School Counseling and have served as a high school guidance counselor for 8 years. During this time I have taught many students the skills they needed to do well on the SAT Writing test.

The SAT writing test consists of two parts. The multiple-choice section asks questions about correcting grammar and usage errors in sentences, as well as recognizing how to improve sentences and paragraphs. The second section requires a student to write a short (20-minute) essay. Using examples from previous SAT tests, I give students step-by-step instruction in how to write an effective SAT essay and help them write several sample essays. I also review the grammar, usage, and writing knowledge needed to do well on the multiple-choice questions, as well as a number of test-taking strategies.

Spelling

Since I have been an English teacher for over 20 years, I am a very good speller and I have learned how to help students with their spelling. Students won't be able to rely on "spell check" when they take tests in college, so I want to help them spell words correctly on their own by learning spelling rules, reviewing phonics, and gaining confidence!

Study Skills

Since I have been an English teacher for more than 20 years and a guidance counselor for eight years, I have worked with many students to improve their study skills. Some of of the skills I teach students are time management, organization, and working effectively with their teachers.

TOEFL

I have a Master's degree in English and have taught high school English for over 20 years. I have worked with many students who need help with their English reading and vocabulary and have taught students how to write correctly, confidently, and creatively in English. I greatly enjoy working with all students, helping them succeed in every aspect of English. In addition, I also give students test-taking hints and strategies that help them perform well on tests like the TOEFL.

Vocabulary

I have a Master's degree in English and have taught English for more than 20 years.

The key to having a good vocabulary is not memorizing long lists of words. Instead, students can often learn to understand the meaning of words they don't know by considering the context, thinking about the meaning of similar words or antonyms (words with opposite meanings). I work with the students as they practice using these skills. There are also some fun vocabulary games which help students improve their vocabulary.

Writing

I have a Master's degree in English and have taught high school English for over 20 years. During that time, I have taught hundreds of students how to write correctly, confidently, and creatively. Remember that there are no inherently "good writers" and "bad writers." Writing is a skill that can be learned, just like learning to drive a bike or a car. With practice, most students can learn to write good essays. For example, many students in my English classes have entered the class as poor or average writers, but they write very effectively by the end of the class.
