I am available to tutor all levels of mathematics from Algebra to graduate discrete mathematics. I taught mathematics at two major universities. In addition to the usual subjects, I am qualified to tutor actuarial math, statistics and probability, theoretical computer science, combinatorics and introductory graduate topics in discrete mathematics. I am willing to tutor individuals or small groups.

I am most helpful to students when the tutoring occurs over a longer period of time. This allows me to identify the topics that are the root causes of the student's problems. Tutoring for one or two weeks with the goal of passing a test or completing a single assignment does not usually prepare the student to continue their study of mathematics.

When teaching calculus at The Rochester Institute of Technology, I ran into students who struggled due to a lack of confidence in their skills in algebra or even arithmetic. These students were discouraged by the amount of time it took them to complete assignments. Once we identified that the problem was not in their understanding of the new material, but with their more basic skills, they were able to improve their performance.

I can also help students improve their strategies on standardized tests. Determining which problems to solve first, which ones to come back to later, and which ones to avoid entirely helps students manage the time pressure of these tests.

George's subjects

####
Calculus

I have taught calculus at several colleges and universities. My background in academia and industry allows me to teach calculus from either a theoretical or an applied approach, depending on student needs and interests.

####
Statistics

I studied statistics as part of the actuarial exam process. Two of the early exams focused on statistical methods, including regression, parameter fitting, Bayesian, and non-Bayesian techniques. Several of the other exams touched on statistical analysis.

####
Discrete Math

I took courses in combinatorics, algorithms, introduction to discrete math, Ramsey theory, integer programming and other miscellaneous discrete math courses. I taught Intro to Discrete Mathematics at Rochester Institute of Technology. I hold a PhD in Algorithms, Combinatorics and Optimization.

####
Actuarial Science

I have 14 years' experience as a practicing actuary. I am a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, having completed the actuarial exam process.

####
Linear Algebra

I took courses in linear algebra, linear programming, and linear optimization. I hold a PhD in Algorithms Combinatorics and Optimization. I taught courses in Advanced Linear Programming at Rochester Institute of Technology.
