I am a language enthusiast willing to share my expertise in English writing, reading and speaking skills, as well as my fluency in French and working knowledge of Spanish. I have a B.A. in French and later, I obtained my M.A. in English as a Second Language where I mentored several fellow graduate students during their practicum. Also, I have tutored local high school students since 1994 in French, Spanish, English and Basic Mathematics, and have taught English as a Second Language (before budget cuts...) to adults for three years after receiving my Master's degree. I also believe myself to be an above-average writer and creative writer. My parody poetry memoirs were just accepted for publication!

I am currently certified to teach French and English in grades 6-12 (in PA and NJ), and have been tutoring middle and high school students in French and English grammar, reading, phonics) since 1980. I believe that I have the patience and nurturing qualities necessary to teach this age group-in addition to the academic piece. Also, I obtained my M.A. TESL in 2006, and for three years (sadly, before PA State budget cuts), I taught English as a Second Language to adults whose first language wasn't English. Finally, I had opened and run an Adult ESL teaching site at one of the local high schools in Downingtown, PA-my home town.


English is where it all started for me! In the fourth grade, I wanted to be an English teacher. I have an excellent grasp of English grammar and am a very good creative writer (and am in the process of publishing my memoirs!) That desire branched out into a love of foreign languages as I majored in French and received my B.A. Recently, I received my Masters in English as a Second Language where I have been a private adult tutor. I have also been tutoring grades 6-12 in English, French and beginning Spanish for over 20 years.


I hold an M.A. TESL and certification from West Chester University of Pennsylvania (2006). Between 2002 and 2006, I have tutored adult ELLs privately in the primary skills of listening, writing, reading and speaking. Also, after receiving my M.A. TESL-and before adult education budget cuts in Pennsylvania-I taught Adult ESL through a community service organization based in Kennett Square, specifically within their Coatesville and Kennett Square sites. I also started a Downingtown (hometown) site wherein I remained the site coordinator for one year while simultaneously continuing to teach Adult ESL-before PA State adult education budget cuts forced the closing of my site.


I earned my B.A. in 1979 and have been teaching and tutoring French since then in Grades 7-12. During my undergraduate studies, I spent my sophomore summer abroad to hone my French fluency. I am available to assist students to improve their listening, writing, reading and speaking skills. I have been substitute teaching and tutoring multi-level students in Grades 6-12 since 1994. Included in the subjects taught have been all of the academic subjects + French (B.A. and certified), Spanish (Minor), English (certified), and English as a Second Language (M.A. TESL).

Additionally many of both the Grade 6-12-and the Adult ESL-students whom I have tutored in French, Spanish, and ESL required extensive "foundation" instruction in "English" composition, reading, grammar, usage, and spelling - which I was able to provide.


Thanks to my undergraduate degree in French, as well as my Masters Degree in English as a Second Language, I improved upon my English grammar and writing skills. However, I was well taught by competent teachers in elementary and high school...not to mention my eloquent parents!

I am available to assist students with identifying parts of speech, as well as analyzing-and improving-sentence structure.


I have very neat handwriting (cursive) thanks to the tutelage of my Mom. Growing up on the cusp of the computer age, this quality resulted in beautifully-presented documents, term papers, and projects.

In today's electronic age colleges, universities, and some employers still request potential students and job seekers to hand-write a portion of admissions documents or employment applications respectively.

During handwriting lessons, I would have students first practice individual tracing and the "free-writing" of lower case and upper case letters. Next, students would practice writing commonly-used words containing those letters. Finally, I would provide textbook examples with incorrect capitalization and "sloppy" handwriting for students to correct and re-write.


I have been an excellent speller and writer all my life. Additionally, I have studied French phonetics (B.A.) and Spanish phonetics (Undergraduate Minor) during my undergraduate studies. Finally, I have been tutoring Adult English as a Second Language learners since 2006, and incorporated many successful techniques (authentic tongue twisters, for example) to help native and non-native speakers to improve their English language pronunciation.


Reading and writing are inseparable. Writing is the easier skill. Therefore, students' journal writing (brainstorming) and creative writing could serve as students' first stories. In the classroom, those stories could become authentic and leveled reading material for all. As reading instructional materials, I would choose short texts first and gradually move to more complex ones. Stories could begin with "self interests" and move to "family", "education", "work" and "community-related" topics.


I began studying Spanish in college. Previously, I had received five years of French instruction between middle and high school. After graduating college, I obtained my M.A. TESL (Masters in English as a Second Language) where my Spanish ability was useful in helping adults to learn English.

I would be comfortable tutoring Spanish at the beginning level.


I have always considered myself to be an above average speller...due to my parents' excellent writing abilities. As I would learn later in graduate school, it is in writing that all of one's skills improve: writing, grammar, comprehension, vocabulary,and spelling-to name a few.

Also, I developed many English phonetic "spelling tricks"-especially from having taught English as a Second Language to adults.

Spelling should be taught in context; so please come with the books and materials you are reading this year in school, as well as with your favorite "PCR" books from this year or previous years. Have fun with the {ough} paragraph below!

I am certified to teach English (Cert.), French (B.A.) and English as a Second Language (M.A. TESL). I have been substitute teaching (Grades 6-12)and tutoring French and English (Grades 6-12)since 1980 and Beginning Spanish (since 1994. I am very organized and have substitute taught study skills students since 1994.


A good way to build one's vocabulary is to create thematic vocabulary lists. These lists should be created about most to least familiar topics: self and family, work, education and community. Within those topics, "self" for example, the following sub-topics could be explored: Who am I? (physical features, likes and dislikes,"favorites", etc.

These thematic vocabulary lists could become practical teaching tools within a "recipe" curriculum (which I have used successfully over the years)to teach thematic vocabulary-specifically to Adult ESL students. Beginning and low-intermediate learners could list thematic vocabulary while high-intermediate and advanced learners could embed thematic vocabulary within sentences, paragraphs and compositions.

Once written, these written materials could serve as authentic and leveled reading texts for fellow classmates and peers.


My process-writing training should be invaluable to anyone seeking out writing help. Whether creating graphic organizers, brainstorming, journal writing, or expository (essay) writing, I look forward to helping you progress successfully along a most to least familiar writing continuum.
