ASVAB

I am certified in and comfortable with the subjects that are the core of the ASVAB--basic math knowledge, math comprehension/reasoning, vocabulary (word knowledge) and reading comprehension. My collegiate schooling (BS in engineering) and military/life experiences make me proficient in and comfortable with the technical subtests of the exam. For example, running a motor pool in the military and working on my own vehicles makes me very comfortable with the automotive and shop information subtests.

My 20+ years of training and coaching experience as a military officer and project manager provide me multiple tools to assess other impacts on the students' test-taking experience to identify non-academic areas for improvement and structure an appropriate study approach to provide a more complete test preparation program.

Elementary (K-6th)

For more than 10 years, I have tutored students at all levels of their K-12, education in math, science, history, beginning Spanish, English (writing, vocabulary, grammar, content/structure), communication and life skills.

Public Speaking

During my military career I routinely prepared and presented speeches and briefings and narrated ceremonies. Topics ran the spectrum from status updates to classroom instruction to graduation and motivational speeches. As a Distinguished Toastmaster, I have achieved the highest level of accomplishment in the Toastmasters International communication and leadership development programs. This required presenting 40 speeches in seven unrelated categories and several more instructional speeches dealing with general communication, meeting and leadership principles.

I mentored several club members to reach communication and leadership achievement levels and goals, to include one who has earned Distinguished Toastmaster status. As the Vice President for Public Relations and then President of my Toastmasters club I organized and ran four youth leadership development programs to introduce high school students to structured and formal speaking and provide them the opportunity to practice and develop their oral communication skills.

Soccer

As a child, I learned to play soccer in Germany with a local boys club. I continued to play soccer through 12th grade as a way to stay in shape for the track team. I played intramural soccer at West Point and continued to play off and on while in the military. I coached my daughter's girls' team for two years and currently work with my niece, who is on a girls' travel team.

Study Skills

Academic success has always been important to me, and that requires strong organizational and study skills to manage competing demands. Achieving academic success at the United States Military Academy required I add time management skills and continue to build and refine my organizational skills. I maintained and continued building those study, organizational and time management skills to earn a 4.0 in my Masters' program while working full time, working on professional submissions and volunteering several hours a week.

Volleyball

I played varsity volleyball and participated in a women's league in high school and was recruited to play for West Point. I played in a men's league for two years in the military, while concurrently playing on an all-stars women's team. I played and coached in intramural leagues periodically throughout my miitary career.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
