I first caught the tutoring bug when I was working as a behavioral mentor with at-risk kids in the school system. Although I enjoyed the work and the age group (teens), helping them academically was not in my job description and was actually frowned upon. But I found that this was what I really wanted to do! Shortly after that I began tutoring math online. I loved the job and quickly rose to a Tutor III, the highest rank and have worked with hundreds of students. I also worked as a mentor for new tutors. As much as I loved the flexibility of tutoring online, I did take on some students out of my home. I found the one-on-one rapport to be very rewarding and when our oldest son was a junior I helped him and his girlfriend with the SAT and ACT. This was back in 2008 and I haven't looked back!
I have taken the SAT and ACT recently and my composite score is in the 97th percentile. I have spent years perfecting my own method of test prep which focuses on three main components: Strategies, Concepts and Practice. I have found each student to be unique and although I have done classes I have found the best way to raise students’ scores is to work with them individually. My students who have had the greatest success have been able to tutor two hours per week until they reach their score goal in session, on practice tests. The average amount of tutoring for optimum results is 30 hours. Tutoring is my profession and it’s how I help pay for tuition for three in college right now (yes, three!) but the reward of getting that email or call from parents who tell me their child got the score they wanted is priceless!
Because I have seen the strong correlation between time in session and score increase I really wanted to create a system that was affordable. Therefore, I offer tutoring only at the Howland Library. I assign weekly homework in the official guides and, in session, I go over missed questions, sprinkling in effective strategies and plugging gaps in content. Each session is individually planned to fit the student’s needs based on progress toward score goals. Because I have no travel time and can efficiently give students just what they are missing to maximize their score, I can charge substantially less than other tutors. This has been a win/win situation for me and my students!
I hope that you will contact me with any questions. I would love to help you crush these tests!
