I am a certified Kripalu Yoga teacher. Kripalu yoga is compassionate yoga. The compassionate yoga approach teaches participants how to listen to and honor their own body. Classes include the practice of postures, breath work, meditation and relaxation. Postures are practiced to stretch and strengthen the body, as well as releasing chronic stress and increasing self- awareness. Practicing breath work is essential to Kripalu yoga. Breathing deeply strengthens abdominal and intercostal muscles and releases physical tension and emotional holdings. Practicing breath work can help children release anger or boost energy or focus in times of stress. Bringing the mind to stillness with meditation promotes a sense of calmness and centering.
I teach yoga to children and adults at local private schools, studios and community centers.
As a progressive elementary school educator with over ten years of teaching, I take learning differences seriously. Recognizing that some students learn more easily though different modalities has a direct implication on how I create my lessons. I prepare content in a variety of ways that incorporates visual, kinesthetic and and auditory modes if instructional strategies. I appreciate that not all students understand one way of learning new material and content. My goal is to provide opportunities for students to construct their own learning. Additionally, I believe that students have an increased chance of learning when they feel safe to take risks. I make every effort to be keenly aware of each student's strengths and areas that need strengthening. I am responsible for nurturing the intellectual and emotional development of each student. It is my job to safeguard each student's freedom to express their thoughts, questions and ideas. My students perceive me as fair, trustworthy and approachable. As an added plus, for students who are interested in the arts, I am willing to share my knowledge of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's collection and provide enrichment field trips to the Museum.
