Hello Fellow Artists and Writers,
My name is Claudia, and I am a local artist/writer with a background in 2 dimensional fine art including painting (watercolor, oil, acrylic, acrylic inks, pastel and gouache), drawing (pencil, color pencil, charcoal, graphite, marker, and pen & ink), cartooning, printmaking (woodcut, linocut, monoprint), mixed media and illustration. I am currently working on a cartoon/story series about my cat BooBoo.
I have also taught beginning/intermediate mosaics using a wide variety of materials including stone, eggshell, glass, sea glass, and clay. Paper clay is a newer medium which is totally non-toxic and yields beautiful results. Working with paper clay might be a great way for a young child to explore the three dimensional aspects of art making. I always encourage students not to be afraid to take a chance. Exploring all of their options strengthens their work and makes it that much richer. Some wonderful works of art have evolved from mistakes. I also encourage students to explore all possibilities to find the best solution to each unique project they are working on.
Writing is also an expressive form of communication which I love. Did you ever read a story where you could see every detail of the story in your mind? This happens when there is a perfect balance of sentence structure and descriptive phrasing. The best story tellers are very familiar with their subject, and, they pick the most convincing arrangement of sentences to illustrate their story. Telling a story is not always a simple thing, but it can be broken down into simple components. I would like to help you with this!
I was educated at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia, PA.
Drawing is the basis of all art. Drawing what is right in front of you along with drawing from your imagination and memory will be explored. Striving towards mastery of both forms of drawing enables an artist to express themselves freely. Drawing allows the fundamental visual understanding of how things work. Eye-hand coordination, perception, sensitivity, visualization, tonality and rhythm all are at play in a drawing.
Different artists and drawing styles will be explored in these tutoring sessions. The personal and unique style of the student will be welcomed and encouraged. It is my expectation that whoever takes this class learns a lot and has loads of fun! Happy drawing to all.
I have studied painting and the many aspects that go with it for years. Understanding the nature of color and how its use can determine the mood and meaning of a painting is very important. I would also like to teach my students about value, tone, contrast and composition. Painting takes a while to understand and grasp deeply. I keep this in mind as I am teaching. You don't so much as arrive at a painting as evolve into it. Its a process!
I will take the student through the initial thoughts that bubble up through their subconscious, and, work with them and their ideas while teaching the basic tenets of painting in all different media. Any subject matter is welcome.
Reading is a fundamental life skill. People who struggle with reading struggle with other subjects as well and there is no need for this. I think I can reach students because I understand why they may be failing.
Usually when a person is struggling with something, he or she does not have the proper tools in their arsenal. Reading requires concentration, logic, a calm mind and above all a mastery of vocabulary. Vocabulary is the key that opens a vast world of knowledge, adventure and ideas to the reader. I would like to pass on my love of reading to my students.
This course explores the effective use of language to persuade, illustrate, convince and otherwise bring an idea to life on the page.
Different styles of writing are explored, including factual, fiction, humorous and work related writing. Different authors are explored to show the many varied styles of writing in this flexible course.
