Over the last 2 decades I have been blessed to work with children of all ages and varying educational backgrounds. The first several years were through work at my local church as a volunteer teaching Sunday school, helping children in the community through homework help with an after school program and also aided as a counselor for their vacation bible school for a few summers. During this time I was able to cultivate my skills with working with children and learned how to make learning light and fun, but effective.
In my last 11.5 years of professional employment I have worked as a child care worker and provided advise on conflict resolution. As a bilingual social worker, I provided parenting education to young single parents. Finally, as a nanny, I provided homework help on a consistent basis. During this time, I also provided freelance tutoring when asked in math and Spanish.
My main subjects of tutoring are in math, Spanish and early reading skills. I have always excelled in math, studied Spanish abroad in Mexico and worked on teaching beginning sounds and phonics for most of the years that I was a nanny. Some of the students that I tutor have seen their test scores improve by 2 grades after two sessions. I feel the same way children do...learning shouldn't hurt. My job is to help them find/renew the joy of learning and restore any confidence that may have been lost.
