I was a public school math teacher for over 35 years, teaching at both the jr. high and sr. high levels. I've taught all secondary math topics, concentrating mostly on algebra 1 & 2, pre-calculus (including trig), and calculus. I've conducted thousands of tutoring sessions over my career, and I know the 'stumbling blocks' kids typically face. To help them, I focus on explaining WHY things work the way they do, rather than simply showing the procedure used to get the answer. Getting students to see the 'big picture', and continually spiraling previously-learned material, is crucial to their developing deep understandings.
Additionally, I was the Lead Teacher for Mathematics in my district. This gave me the added opportunity to see how the math curriculum meshes from K-12, as well as to stay abreast of the latest teaching and learning methodologies.
