I have been teaching now for over 20 years. I love to teach, am patient and a pretty good explainer (so my students tell me). I like to challenge my students while at the same time making sure they are learning. A student's success is my success. My tutoring approach is to initially establish a list of goals with the student and to prepare a plan to achieve those goals. This is an interactive process and the student will actively participate in setting goals and creating the plan. After the plan is completed, we proceed to follow the plan with frequent check ins so that we can make modifications if needed.
One of my strengths and talents is an ability to explain things to students so that they "get it." Much of learning is built upon what was learned before, and if a student misses a particular aspect, this can weaken their ongoing understanding of new material. Therefore it is very important to me as a teacher that students get the concepts and feel like they "took away" something from the learning experience. I often get comments from students like, "I learned a lot in your class," or "I never understood that before now." This is one of the best complements a teacher might have. As part of this learning process, students sometimes need help in meta-skills like problem solving. Helping students with these skills is an integral part of my own teaching process.
As mentioned above I have more than 20 years of teaching experience which includes many office hours of helping students individually. I hold a Bachelors in Mathematics from Drexel University, a Masters in Computer Science from Temple University, and a Ph.D in Computer Science from Temple University. I can tutor students in mathematics including Algebra, Geometry, Trig, and Calculus. I can also provide tutoring in computer languages, programming, and networking.
Update: There are a couple of topics that I can tutor in that are not part of the WyzAnt roster of courses but are fairly current and topical. One of these is Creating Computer Games and the other is learning to develop for the iPhone and iPad. If you are interested in tutoring for these topics, please email me to discuss your interest.
