Hi,
My name is Robin. There are 2 things in life that really thrill me - one is learning - and my favorite way to learn is by reading, then putting what I read into practice. The second thing I love is teaching. When I can teach someone something that can improve their life, it gives their life and mine more meaning. My favorite subject to teach is reading. When you read, you can go anywhere you want to go, be anything you want to be and become anything you want to become! You can go to Mars, or Japan. You can be the next president or a fairy princess! You have the whole universe - imaginary and real that you can travel through!
Along with teaching them how to read, I also teach each student to see the best in him or her self - to really see their own potential. Because even if you are the best reader in the world and have the largest sight vocabulary that anyone has ever had, but you don't like who you see in the mirror everyday, it cuts your universe in half, then you can only travel the imaginary side. I want my students to be able to reach their fullest potential so they can travel ALL parts of the universe.
I discovered the fact that I love to teach reading when my kids were little and just learning about the world. Then, when they went to school, I went back to work. I worked regular jobs for about 20 yrs. Then I got laid off yet again. This time I decided to try something different. I was working on building a home based business, when one day I saw an article in a local news paper saying that the Reading/Berks Literacy Council was looking for new tutors. I called about it, went through the training class there and was assigned my first student. We met 3-4 days /week for almost a year and a half. When we first met he had gotten only 3 questions right on his assessment test. Before he moved away, he took a re-assessment test and got only 2 wrong! He was SOOOO happy and justifiably proud of himself! I was very proud of him too. It was A LOT of work on his part. My part was to teach him the basics - phonics, identifying letters and letter combinations by both sight and sound, how to combine letters to get the sound he was looking for, and to be supportive and patient. We tried several different types of material and methods of learning till we found what worked for him.
If I were asked to describe myself I would have to say that I'm very patient, supportive, persistent and creative. I love life and want to live it to the fullest. I also want to help as many others as I can to live their life to the fullest. And I believe that the ability to read is one of the most basic building blocks to a completely fulfilled life.
