If you are having trouble in a high school or college level math
class, or are preparing to take the SATs, then look no further. I am a 2001 graduate of Penn State's Math Education department. I have a flexible schedule with availability during the day, night, or weekends. My specialty is pre-algebra
. I prefer 90 minute sessions, as an hour is just too short and two hours is just too long. We can meet at your house, a library, diner, or any of the Barnes & Nobles. If money is a concern, I can meet with small study groups at a more affordable rate per student.
I can provide references. I have all the clearances a school employee must have, namely the criminal checks and child abuse clearances.
I got back into tutoring within the past few years purely by accident. I went to pick up my order of Chinese
food at a local restaurant and saw a sign in the window requesting a math tutor for the owners' son. Over the next year or two I'd meet with him many times a week. It made me realize how fun and rewarding tutoring can be. It's like I'm getting paid to solve crossword puzzles, as that's how math problems feel for me.
I have experience with every type of student imaginable. Some of those I have tutored include students from middle school all the way up to college, and range in age from 12 to 60. When I was younger, I even tutored one of my older sisters AND my father in algebra, as neither reached that level in high school.
One of the things I emphasize is learning how to do basic math
without the use of calculators. Calculators are great for some problems, like say 23.98342 x .00498, or for graphing multiple equations, but they were not designed for everything. For instance every student should be able to compute 12 x 40 by hand. I have found that most students today rely on calculators to do the most basic of tasks, which sadly has robbed them of being able to complete problems that they learned in elementary school. The things they might have forgotten include adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions
, division and multiplication of smaller numbers, and the basic times tables. By forcing students to do most computations without a calculator, their grades and their confidence will improve.
I should also note that I minored in Spanish
, and have helped a few students in that subject as well.
3 hours notice required
Due to the prep time needed for calculus, I must charge $35/hr instead of $30/hr. I try to be lenient on the cancellation fee. Just give me enough notice and don't make a habit of canceling.
