Hi To All Current And Aspiring Students!
My name is Heni, and I am a VERY experienced teacher and tutor. My areas of expertise are English, Spanish, ESL, French, Test Preparation and Study Skills. I have worked with students of all ages, levels and backgrounds very effectively.
I am a graduate of Temple University, Philadelphia, Pa., where I earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English, Spanish and French Education. I adore language, in all its aspects, and I am often told I pass that passion on to my students. Many of my student and peer evaluations attest to the fact that I am patient, fun to work with, energetic, tenacious, reliable, caring, and easy to understand, all of which makes time go by quickly with me.
When I reflect upon my tutoring experience, I have many fond memories of past--and present--students. I recall a 6 year old 1st grader, who was very bright and endearing, who always referred to me as "Ms. Heni," whom I guided through some early reading and phonetic difficulties.
On the other side of the spectrum, I tutored a 61 year old college student who was struggling a lot with Spanish, but "we" wound up with a decent passing grade by the semester's end.
There are so many students and stories in between those two age groups--from elementary to middle and high school and college, and those who simply want self-improvement at any age. For example, I am currently working with a student in his forties, who chooses to be taught to improve his communication skills for business. Admittedly, he never cared much about learning in public school, but now wants to perfect his reading, writing and spelling abilities. He has gotten almost all "A's" in his Introductory English Composition Courses in a local junior college, and his confidence has grown enormously.
Additionally, I have helped college bound, as well as those with undergraduate degrees, in all phases of writing and building their vocabularies. I fondly recall one very determined undergraduate with whom I worked to help her write 3 applications to graduate school, and she was accepted to all three. She was especially excited to be one of only 100 accepted to the Master's Program in Social Work at the university that was her first choice. She recently emailed me to tell me how great she is doing in that program.
I also fondly recall many of my ESL students whom I have helped with everything from pronunciation and grammar to accent reduction. I especially remember a young college student from India who was so fearful of speaking English, that she would always speak in a whispering fashion. I tutored her in much of my free time, and she conquered her fears so much, that she was able to earn a grade of "A" in her Public Speaking class!
Many of my previous students still keep in touch with me--even after they graduate--just to let me know how they are doing and see how I am.
Nothing pleases me more than to hear of their further successes as they move forward, and I take great pride in the fact that I may have contributed anything to their achievements.
I cannot wait to meet the next students for the coming year and beyond. Working with each new student is an exciting and challenging experience of which I never tire. It is my express desire to see each student achieve to the best of his/her potential.
Upon review of my past record, as it were, it would seem I am doing something right with my teaching style, but, more importantly, students of all ages and with various challenges, invariably improve vastly after we work together. That is my ultimate goal upon which I thrive.
I am often approached by my students, at the university where I teach, for advice on selecting courses.
I also am frequently asked to write letters of recommendation for my students for work/school applications.
Furthermore, I have helped prospective college students compose applications to universities of their choice, some of which were quite lengthy and detailed.
Those I have helped, and there have been several, have been accepted to each school to which they applied.
I have been a classroom teacher and tutor for over 25 years. In that capacity, I have tutored students from preschool age through the university level.
I have run the gamut of subjects for K-6 from phonics and reading, spelling and writing, foreign language and ESL, to basic math and study skills.
Younger children enjoy working with me a lot, as they have often expressed.
Having raised 3 children of my own, I am very familiar--both as a mother and educator--with the special needs, strategies and concerns that accompany younger students.
As a tutor and teacher of English I have worked with many students on all kinds of English assignments, from creative essays to research papers.
Reading interpretations/comprehension of all types have been areas I have worked on as well.
We have covered a broad spectrum of topics, authors, and themes.
I have run the gamut of writing assignments including, but not limited to, persuasive, expository, compare and contrast, informative, narrative and descriptive.
I have prepared students for the PSAT and SAT Vocabulary components, as well as the Reading and Writing portions.
My success rate has been extraordinary and the feedback I get from students is quite wonderful too.
In regard to grammar, per se, I am a stickler, if you will, for proper usage!
I am very well versed in the rules that we use in English, as well as the foreign languages I teach.
It saddens me that so many native speakers of English engage in improper grammar usage much of the time, along with poor pronunciation.
I adore language in all its many facets, and would love to pass that adoration and knowledge on to those who seek to improve their grammar skills.
Having been a language teacher for over 25 years, I have a great deal of experience in teaching and tutoring phonics. I have tutored students in the phonetic spelling of words, in English, ESL, Spanish and French.
I have often used the series "Hooked on Phonics,"with younger and ESL students, as well as my own creative devices/methods.
I emphasize pronunciation and syllabification in order to achieve success in articulation of words and phrases.
I have tutored considerably in writing assignments for Public Speaking class.
Not only have I aided in the written aspects of requisite assignments such as acceptance speeches, eulogies, instructional, and persuasive arguments, but I have also directed Public Speaking students in the art of good delivery in front of the class. That is, how to inform, influence, or entertain.
This includes good articulation, eye contact, interaction with the audience and preparation for question and answer sessions upon completion of the speech.
As a teacher/tutor of over 25 years, I have helped students develop Study Skills on many occasions.
This includes working on proper time allotment for various assignments and prioritizing the least and most difficult subjects and assignments.
It also encompasses learning how to choose the salient points of a reading task, or other assignment...often by highlighting in order to go back over the material for easier review.
I also teach many Mnemonic devices, such as acronyms, in order to retain information.
I like to teach the student not to feel intimidated or daunted by any assignment that is new or different or seems more involved than he/she is used to.
I have written every type of paper with students of all ages, levels and backgrounds.
I have also done many resumes, and their updates.
College entrance essays and research papers are something I enjoy doing too.
I love creative writing and have written every type of essay from narrative and descriptive, to persuasive, informative and compare/contrast, with students achieving an "A" in most cases!
Many business folks have sought my services to "polish" various paperwork that is needed, and after we have worked together, their business expands, or in the case of individuals, they expand their workload, or have gotten promotions.
Whatever your writing need, my vast experience and cumulative expertise will advance your career, as pertains to business, or if a student, improve your grades!
