Adobe InDesign

I am a graphic designer and illustrator and have operated a graphic design studio for 30 plus years, using computer software for 20 of those years. I began using Pagemaker, then switched to QuarkXpress, and then switched to InDesign when it came out about 10 years ago. I have used Adobe's Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) to design identity packages, promotional materials, signage, packaging, web sites, magazines and textbooks. I also teach the Creative Suite in my classes at Albright College.

Desktop Publishing

I am a graphic designer and illustrator and have operated a graphic design studio for 30 plus years, using computer software for 20 of those years. I began using Pagemaker, then switched to QuarkXpress, and then switched to InDesign when it came out about 10 years ago. I have used Adobe's Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) to design identity packages, promotional materials, signage, packaging, web sites, magazines and textbooks. I work with commercial printers and know how to prepare the files correctly so they will reproduce properly. I also teach the Creative Suite in my classes at Albright College.

Drawing

I am an illustrator, working in the advertising and publishing fields for over 30 years. I also teach drawing at Albright College and at the Yocum Institute. I am highly skilled in both traditional and digital media. I majored in fine arts in college and so have had traditional training in drawing. I believe that anyone can learn how to draw if they want to. The first and most important step is learning how to see what is really there and then learning how to work with the tools and art materials to put it down on paper. I really enjoy helping people discover their artistic talents.

Macintosh

I work as a graphic designer using Macintosh computers every day. I started with a Radius, a Macintosh clone in the early 1990s and have upgraded through the years, using G4s, G5s, and am currently using a 27" screen imac with an intel processor. I also use Mac laptops. I am expert at the Creative Suite on the Mac and also Microsoft Office, using PowerPoint, Word and Excel. I know and use a lot of keyboard shortcuts in my work. I can also diagnose and fix minor issues that come up on the Mac.

Painting

I am an illustrator, working in the advertising and publishing fields for over 30 years. I am also a painter and am experienced in oils, acrylics, watercolor and mixed media. I exhibit my paintings in juried and invitational shows and do commissioned portraits. I also teach painting at the Yocum Institute. I have also been giving private lessons to mostly high school students who are working on their portfolios in order to apply to art school. I majored in fine arts in college and so have had traditional training in painting. I really enjoy helping people discover their artistic talents.

Photography

I first learned photography in college, in the days of film and darkrooms. I know how to develop film and make prints, although I haven't used my film camera in a number of years. I also have a digital SLR and mostly use that in my business and social life. The art of taking pictures is pretty similar for film or digital, it's a matter of balancing how much light hits the film (or sensor) by adjusting the aperture size or length of exposure. In my business I often take photos to use in ads or on websites. I shoot on location or at my studio, using photo lights and seamless backdrops. Besides knowing the mechanics of picture-taking, I am trained in composition and color, since I am a visual artist.

Sewing

I have been sewing my own clothes since I was in school. I can follow a commercial pattern or can create a pattern from an existing garment. I know how to use home and industrial machines. I also know how to choose fabrics. I am experienced with hand sewing for repairs and alterations and also can do embroidery and applique. I have made quilts and curtains, too.

I am an instructor in the Fashion Department at Albright College and helped students with their projects. I am also involved in our Fashion Show every year, judging which garment are professional enough to be in the show.

Web Design

I operate a small graphic design studio and one of my services is web design. I design using Photoshop to create and optimize images, and using Dreamweaver for the actual layout. I also understand the basic principles of html and css. This is important because you need to be able to tweak the code and troubleshoot as to why things don't work as expected in all browsers. I have been working as a designer of print media for over 30 years and on web sites for about 10 years.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
