Hello prospective students and parents! I am an energetic, enthusiastic and experienced PhD chemist who is knowledgeable in the areas of chemistry, math, and general science. My passion for science, and chemistry specifically, blossomed when I was able to participate in chemistry demonstrations at elementary, middle and high schools local to my alma mater of Penn State University. Seeing students become more interested in chemistry and ask more questions when they saw physical demonstrations encouraged me to get better at explaining chemical principles on their level. I enjoy tutoring and helping students, or anyone who will listen, better understand topics in chemistry and continuing to learn about these same subjects myself.
My expertise is in the field of analytical chemistry. While my Ph.D studies were focused in the analytical area, I have significant experience in both areas of organic chemistry and biochemistry as well. During my doctoral studies I was selected to participate in the National Science Foundation GK-12 program where I worked in the local high school classroom setting with a science teacher. Two years in this program not only helped me improve my communication of science to youth, but also gave me more experience in tutoring high school level science. In addition, local families contacted me to tutor students in high school level chemistry and help with AP Chemistry exam preparations.
As a teaching assistant for four years in graduate school and a tutor as an undergraduate, I have a solid base of experience in tutoring undergraduate students in various levels of chemistry. The material I have covered ranges from general chemistry (for majors and non-majors) to analytical chemistry courses such as quantitative analysis and instrumental analysis as well as organic chemistry.
Personally, I feel that learning is best in a one-on-one setting with consistent meetings. Many students I have tutored found that meeting 1-2 hours per week on a weekly basis was a significant help to their studies. Over time some students realized they needed more or less time per week and we adjusted our meeting times accordingly. While it will be completely up to you to determine what is best, I recommend at least 1 hour per week on a weekly basis to start.
