My name is Michael. I have worked as a teacher at all grades levels from 3 through college. I served as a school principal for 11 years as well. I am currently teaching math at a local college, and also working with educational video. I have written two math textbooks. However, I am also able to teach history, literature, and writing. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked for 30+ years in schools and colleges as a teacher, tutor and school principal. I have worked directly with ADD/ADHD students as a teacher, and supervised and supported other teachers in working with such students. I have designed resource room support services for students with ADHD and/or other issues that can interfere with learning. I have been trained by individual psychologists in understanding the issues that these students present, as well as in developing strategies to help the students progress, and to help teachers manage such students in class. I am familiar with medications that ADD/ADHD students may take, and the implications and consequences of use and misuse of the medications. As a teacher I am flexible, and enjoy the challenge of adapting to the needs of ADHD students.
I have been involved in working with computers for over 20 years. I began working with computers when the Apple II was popular, and learned Basic and Logo at that time to program the machine. Since then I have taken online courses in Java and Python to extend my knowledge and skills. I am also proficient with products such as Microsoft Office, including Excel, Access and Publisher. With my relatively good math background, I continue to do my best to understand major topics in computer science, such as program design principles and Internet applications.
I am a fluent Hebrew speaker, and an experienced Bar/t Mitzvah tutor. I lived in Israel for a year. I attended Ulpan in Israel and classes at Hebrew University. I attended Jewish Theological Seminary as an education student for two years, taking courses in Bible, Talmud and Jewish literature. I worked as a teacher and principal at several Jewish day schools, where I spoke Hebrew with Israeli staff and taught classes in Hebrew language and Jewish texts. I have studied Bible in depth, with Hebrew commentaries, and study Talmud and Zohar regularly.
