Still looking for that first job...and quantum physics

Well I've been a member of WyzAnt for about 2 weeks now, and I'm still just trying to get my foot in the door with someone to tutor...I've had so many close calls with getting my first lesson, but things just fell through at the last minute :( I am able to tutor in quite a few subjects, and would be very happy to at that however; my dream is to give someone a crash course in quantum physics and the implications it makes to our very own reality. That may sound like silly pseudoscience to some of you, but quantum theory is the most PROVEN theory in physics believe it or not. It has yet to not hold up in 1 experiment, which makes it the most accurate, and most tested theory in physics today. If anyone would be interested in a crash course (sans math, it's just concepts), I'd be willing to only charge a fraction of my base rate. It's what I hope to teach one day and I would love to get some practice at educating someone who knows nothing about it. It's beautiful, quirky, strange, and nonsensical to our everyday common sense, but that's what makes it so much fun! Please write me a message if you'd like to know more about it, I'd only need an hour of your time to blow your mind and turn what you believe to be reality upside down :) Okay It really wont do that, but it will give you a sense of awe as to how things work at the smallest scales of the universe. The real wackiness is what the implications are about reality when you consider a particle acting as a wave or a particle depending on how you measure it, or how particles 'know' when your watching them. It really is quite an enigma, yet about 60% of our technology is based on it! I hope this inspired you to perhaps look into some research about it on your own, or I'd be happy to give you an hour long rundown about it. Also, please help me get my first tutoring session out of the way! I'm sure people haven't picked me to tutor since people may be scared to be my first lesson!

Hi Mike, Just wanted to drop you a line to tell you to not get discouraged. Being a physics guy like me, I'm sure you understand the concept of momentum...I don't exactly understand why, but I think a similar thing applies to tutoring in that as time goes on you pick up a momentum of clientele which snowballs as it progresses. -Dave (since July 2011)

Another thing to consider (being the Quantum Physicist that you are)...is the probability state function that you carry with you as a "Quantum Physics" tutor. The probability that someone chooses you for that subject alone increases as you add other subjects onto it (such as many of the math areas and computer areas which come natural to you as a Quantum Physicist). The truth about tutoring in general is that math sells....why? Well think about how much math you use as a quantum physics guy...and you can see what i mean...start by getting certified in as many different forms of math that wyzant offers that you also came across in your travels as a Quantum physicist and those clients WILL come. I don't think people are scared of your knowledge in and of itself...they just want a brilliant tutor like you to meet them where they're at...since they're paying you the big bucks for the enlightenment...if you get certified in a lot of stuff with wyzant, what happens is you'll get a steady flow of clients who need help with the easier stuff AND you get that occasional college engineering whiz (who just needs this darn quantum physics elective to graduate ) whom you're the only guy in the world who could be perfect for what he needs...Whereas if all you do is attempt to be that one super specialized quantum physics guy...you will indeed only get that super occasional quantum physics student who needs your expertise AND you'll only get a few clients at most all year. Take it from me...I'm a math and physics tutor....and when I started, I was hoping to get just clients in types of physics and college level math that I wanted...unfortunately, I've learned that in order to "market" myself as a tutor successfully, I do best by marketing every bit of my education that I had to succeed in along the way including my high school math and simple computer skills...and the few calculus and physics 2 students I get along the way are the occasional fun part of the job....not the only part. Hope this blog comment is useful...Good luck! Dave Dale (a fellow wyzant math and physics tutor)

Mike Sorry, I had not checked out your profile when I read your blog...I was misled into thinking you were not certified in anything BUT quantum physics...and that was the basis for what I said in the second thread...oops my bad...the only other thing I can say; is just wait a few weeks...August is one of the slowest months for tutoring throughout the whole school year...also I'm not sure how rural an area you're in, but that makes a difference too ..once more, good luck...I hope it picks up for you soon. -Dave Dale

It's alright Dave, I appreciate your helpful suggestions...I am in the process of taking the tests for every subject I feel proficient in so I can market to a larger student base as well. Again, thank you for your help and good luck to you :)

Why does your ad say that you study Quantum Physics at Penn State Lehigh Valley? For one, even at Penn State Main, you would major in physics, not specifically quantum mechanics. Secondly, there is no quantum physics major at Penn State LV. Look it up. They don't grant any hard science degrees. But yeah, if you read Carl Sagan's popular science books, I think you know everything there is to know about quantum mechanics.

Michael J.

I dont know if that was meant to be a sarcastic comment or not? Yes, I'm fully aware you can't major in quantum physics at Penn State. My major is Physics, and I'll be concentrating my studies in quantum physics. When I go for a masters and hopefully doctorate, I'll be concentrating in quantum physics. Although they don't have specifically a quantum physics degree, my advisor Tai-Yin Huang who is head of the physics department, is guiding me in taking classes that will contribute to my future goal. And reading Carl Sagan's books to give you a basic understanding of quantum mechanical concepts, saying that you will know everything there is to know about it is far from the truth. QM goes so much deeper than what can be said in his books, especially in the breakthroughs since the time of those books being written. The QM explained in those books are very watered down and in layman's terms, which happens to leave out many stipulations and small but important details that are overlooked since they aren't worth trying to explain to the general public. Not that he is considering them ignorant though, it's just not feasable to try and fit all the details in a 300 page book.
