...Note: I will always be willing to work with my rate if money is an issue. The teaching experience and helping others is more important to me than money, so I will do my best to never turn down a student in need!...
Hello, potential students and parents,
My name is Michael, and I'm currently attending Penn State Lehigh Valley majoring in Quantum Physics. I attended Juniata College, a small private college, which is located in Huntingdon, PA. I attended there for 2 1/2 years majoring in Computer Science and Software Engineering. I left there as I discovered that I did not want to pursue a career where I might end up in a cubicle coding in solitude for most of my life. I am a very social person, easygoing, and love learning about everything, especially when it comes to the mysteries of the universe. That is why I chose Quantum Physics. It has always been my life dream to learn of these mysteries and help others understand the complexity of the world we live in. I hope to get an MS in physics and possibly a PHD so I can teach at the college level, and eventually move down to high school. I am 25 years old and currently living in the west side of Allentown (the safer side) and I own a car and am willing to drive a good distance to students to meet with them. My best areas of knowledge consist of almost anything in the science field. I've been obsessed with science since I was little. I enjoy and feel confident in helping students understand any courses offered at the high school level. I also have extensive studies and high aptitudes in Physics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Math (up to Calculus II), Chemistry, Astronomy, and Astrophysics. I am also very competent with Geography, Social Studies, American and European History. I love to read and enjoy writing enough to assist with Language Arts skills. I can also offer beginner's drum lessons as well if interested.
As far as tutoring methods, I believe that for memorization to be an effective teaching technique it should be combined with methods that relate to experience. Learning by examples and by association with real life subjects, i.e., how math is used in industry or how the Pythagorean theorem can teach you to calculate the height of a building by its shadow, is far more effective in helping students not only care about the work, but make it exciting and purposeful. I find people are far more receptive to learning when things are relatable and fun. I feel that if the school work is not relatable, I can at least make it a fun experience to help them understand the importance of learning such subjects.
A little about my history and path to knowledge:
I grew up in a small western Pennsylvania town, Indiana, PA; an hour east of Pittsburgh and home to IUP. I lettered in hockey and football, but was also on a number of other team sports including swimming, basketball, and baseball. I also was an avid golf player along with tennis and sand volleyball. I finished High School with a 3.32 GPA as a gifted student. All through my childhood, adolescence, and college career I was an avid reader of Stephen Hawking and other books that related to Cosmology, Theoretical Physics, and Philosophy. I moved to Allentown in 2010 and began saving up for Penn State. I chose a branch campus because I love being able to meet with professors one-on-one and be in classrooms where they actually know your name instead of in an auditorium consisting of hundreds of students. My goal is to get my Master's Degree and possibly a doctorate, depending on job/career availability. I have been working at Wal-Mart in Trexlertown for the past 2 years in various capacities climbing the ladder. Being able to interact with customers daily instilled in me a need to obtain a more educationally challenging position. I hope to be able to start experiencing what I love in life, which is helping others and spreading knowledge to others. I feel tutoring will complement my schedule this fall, as well as, my unmatched enthusiasm to help others obtain that same desire for learning. I would really like that opportunity to help you!
Sincerely,
Michael J.
