The first 3 of 5 years of college was initially in an Engineering curriculum at Walla Walla College in College Place Washington. It is a fully accredited Seventh-day Adventist institution. After the third year I relocated to Spokane and then took 2 more years to complete my Bachelors degree in Mathematics with a minor in Physics. I graduated from Eastern Washington University outside Spokane in 1976.

I have tutored college students in math while attending college in my senior year, and then privately for a year after I graduated. Recently I tutored an adult student from Clackamas Community College in his physics and math classes. I was an instructor for nearly 10 years teaching adults and youth boating safety in the Coast Guard Auxiliary education program. There was a Coast Guard course and certification involved to qualify as an instructor. I have previously assisted a PCC student with his Math 95 class, and now with WyzAnt, I have accumulated 130+ hours of tutor time.

My style is to help the student learn how to learn technical subject material. I do this by finding the best method to use for that individual, whether it be visual, auditory or repetition through writing and problem solving. I attempt to establish a starting point by assessing what the student understands from the class material to date, and then develop a schedule to bring the student current in subject matter and course work. I am married to a retired grade school music teacher who likes to stay familiar with all of my tutoring activities.

I try to work concepts into problem exercises so the student has better understanding of the theory and method used to derive the right answer. Tutor time is not having the instructor just do the homework for the student.

I can help a willing student to improve to a satisfactory level, and I hope I can do it for you.

Algebra 2

I have a BA in Mathematics from EWU, plus I have tutored more than 100 hours now in math and computer subjects.

Calculus was my best math subject in college along with Trignometry. I got A's in both. Now I've tutored over 30 hours in calculus, and more in pre-calculus. I received a very nice feedback from a calculus student's dad.

I have played chess since I was 9 years old. Recent experience has been with coworkers (a learning experience often times), and my grandson (a tutoring experience so far). My proficiency is not rated officially, but I can compete with the better players. My intent is to join a chess club within a year.

I have worked as a COBOL programmer for most of my 34 years of experience. I've used various dialects of COBOL such as Microfocus Workbench Cobol, DEC Cobol, Wang Cobol, IBM mainframe Cobol, which includes Cobol, Cobol II, Enterprise Cobol. I've done some reading on object oriented Cobol, but have not used it. My use of the language includes most every major feature of the language from table handling to calling subroutines in other languages. I consider myself an expert in Cobol.

Computer Programming

My 32 year career as a computer programmer using mostly Cobol on various platforms allowed me the opportunities to design programs, interfaces and systems, code and test batch and online programs and systems and work in pure development as well as in maintenance mode. I am an Access developer familiar with Access FE and SQL Server BE configurations. I can assist students with computer programming concepts and logical thinking.

General Computer

I have worked as a computer programmer for 32 years in all of mainframe, midrange mini and PC environments, and have programmed mostly in COBOL but also am an MS ACCESS developer familiar with SQL and MSSQL Server and Visual Studio 2008. I worked 8 years as a systems analyst. My experience is in manufacturing, banking, insurance healthcare and consulting. I am familiar with Windows 3.1 through Windows XP. In 1983 I passed the CDP exams given by the ICCP. I've received a 98% in a recent Visual Basic 2008 .net class. I can install and configure most software on PCs. I have no experience on Apple or with UNIX-based systems.

Microsoft Access

Starting with Access 2.0, I have developed and maintained numerous Access database applications in various degrees of complexity. I've used forms with subforms, reports with subreports, VBA, Modules, Query designer and queries in code, plus most recently, my latest application is now being upscaled to MSSQL Server 2008 BE using Access .ADP as the FE. I taught Access 97 in-house while employed by Best Consulting in Salem. I know I can assist students with their classes in MS ACCESS 2003 and more recent.

A large portion of my WyzAnt tutoring has been with precalculus students. Pre-Calc has a lot of trignometry which I got A's in college and high school. I understand many of the trouble spots students encounter with trig and I can help students work thru each one. My relaxed no pressure style allows this subject to become familiar to the student with less stress as progress continues to be made.

Statistics was the area of my senior project as a math major in college. I have tutored several statistics students at WyzAnt and am familiar with much of the college level subject material.

Trig is my most enjoyable math subject. It tends to be useful in everyday life. It helped me with all math classes that followed in my major. I consider it one of my strongest math subjects.

Eastern Washington University

Great Patient Tutor Allan is a nice and knowledgeable man, who "does not" have an air of superiority. I was instructed in SQL and tend to pull conversations my way (I don't have a lot of time I want answers, that can be difficult for instructors). Alan was willing to follow and instruct in the areas that I led us into. He's easy to get along with and has a nice teaching tone. He is not forceful or shrill. Looking fo ...
