My name is Joanna and I am a recently graduated student from University of Oregon. I graduated with a degree in Spanish and a certificate in teaching ESL. Language and teaching have always been a passion for me. I love getting to help others express themselves in ways that they might have never expected as they gain confidence in a new language. As a student I studied abroad in Spain and had the opportunity to partner with native speakers there who tutored me and really took me under their wing to teach me not only about the language in and of itself, but about the language as a part of the culture and heritage that had shaped it.
Expressing one's self through language is as much about culture as it is about the grammar and vocabulary that are chosen. This is an exciting process and one that I always try and infuse into my tutoring. I want my students to experience the whole language, not just the sentence structure or grammar. Communicating is about all aspects of a language. Because of this, I like to incorporate a lot of culture into my teaching, as well as aspects of the day to day ways the language is actually spoken by my students' peers. To me, this is just as important as grammar and syntax and other of the more technical aspects of a language.
I have experience student teaching from my classes in ESL at University of Oregon. I was a part of a practicum class that had to plan lessons and actually teach them to a group of students studying abroad from countries all over the world. After graduating, I tutored Saudi Arabian students in language and other subjects for around 6 months. I have also tutored Spanish for high school students off and on since I graduated.
I would love to help you on your journey in learning a new language!
