My name is Mr. Vere M. I have earned a master's in economics and an Oregon Teaching License, grades 5-12. I speak Spanish. I have about 14 years of teaching experience. In my approach to teaching I respect each person's intelligence and try to be attuned to individual learning styles.
My first teaching job was tutoring Native Alaskan students when I was a student at the University of Alaska. Back in Oregon, while working in agriculture, I taught night school in Adult Basic Education. As a graduate student at Oregon State U I taught Agricultural Economics. Later I taught Economics at Willamette U and Chemeketa Community College as a part-time instructor; this freed me to spend lots of good days at home with my young daughter.
I worked in state government for 14 years as an economist, analyst and mathematical programmer. I earned my teaching license at U of Portland in 1997. Then, between writing books, plays and songs, I substituted in high school and middle school.
Perhaps my most rewarding experiences have come late in my career. At Chemawa Indian School from 2001 to 2006 I worked with Native elders and created an afternoon and evening study hall program with daily tutoring sessions. Then in a farmworker program at Chemeketa in Woodburn, I taught English as a Second Language from 2006 to 2009.
This summer I coached my ninth season of youth soccer. I am a coffeehouse singer, an actor, and an everyday writer.
I hope I am able to connect with you or your son or daughter and help you achieve your goals for learning.
