With more than fifteen years of experience helping students and professionals of all ages to speak, read, write and generally communicate better in English, my approach to teaching and learning is always flexible and student focused. People who I train establish clear and achievable goals which are then reached through targeted coaching, a high degree of student output, with clear and concise feedback to monitor progress and continue improving.
Having lived much of my adult life in other countries training top business men and women from the bottom to the tops of large multinational corporations, as well as having managed a language school and having developed many courses and progress monitoring systems, I speak several languages and have a clear understanding of what communication skills are needed to achieve success.
Besides my university degree from the University of Washington in Danish Language and Literature (I also studied language studies at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark for a year during that time), I also have numerous other qualifications, including a diploma in teaching English to speakers of other languages (from Trinity College London), certification in teaching English for business (from the London Chamber of Commerce), as well as having received certificates from numerous other courses and workshops in One-to-One coaching, teaching English to young learners, and negotiation skills and communication.
I am available to help you improve your academic success if you are studying at university but struggling with the language, or I can help you if you are an international professional who would like to develop your English language communication skills for business. I can also help young learners in certain situations to improve their school work, especially if the English language is an obstacle in the learning process.
In the past few years, I have had a special interest in public speaking, and have helped thousands of people give successful presentations. In 2010, I was honored to be featured in 'Dynamic Presentations', a publication written by one of the leading authors in the education industry, Mark Powell, and have also written and participated in numerous other publications designed to help people learn and speak better English (both for daily use, and also specifically for business).
As a final note of interest, my years of experience both as student and teacher have led me to understand that nearly all learners are 'visual learners' to some degree. With this in mind, I am currently finishing work on a set of over a hundred PowerPoint based learning activities that use the power of visual learning with the benefit of motivating, learner focused material. There was standing room only during my recent presentation of this work at a conference in Stuttgart, Germany in 2012; everyone who has seen this work has been excited about it and have all agreed that using motivating, visually stimulating, and personalized material is yet another way to help you as a student learn fast and remember what you learn.
I am willing to travel to any location regardless of distance if travel expenses are paid.
Besides a degree from the University of Washington in Danish Language and Literature, for which I graduated with high honors (Magna Cum Laude) in 1995, my qualifications in the area of ESL/EFL are: (1) Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (from Trinity College London in 2004), (2) English for Business Purposes (from the London Chamber of Commerce in 2007), as well as (3) a training course in Teaching English to Young Learners (from the British Council in 2006), and also (4) a course in One-to-One Coaching in 2007 (training provided by Mark Powell, a top leader and well-published author in the field of ESL/EFL). I have also done extensive graduate-level course work in ESL/EFL theory and research methodology at the University of Hawaii between 1996 and 1999.
For more than fifteen years, I have provided practical and relevant advice, feedback, and easy-to-remember tips to help both novice and experienced public speakers achieve their own personal ‘next level of excellence’. Training is focused on six key areas of effective public speaking: (1) openings, (2) closings, (3) impact language, (4) visuals, (5) body language awareness, and (6) questions and comments from the audience.
Besides qualifications in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (from Trinity College London in 2004) and also specifically in English for Business Purposes (from the London Chamber of Commerce in 2007), I have expanded my approach over time from ‘English lessons’ to ‘communication training’. This means that rather than focusing on mundane grammatical nuances that do little or nothing to improve how a speaker’s message is received, I have used my own experience working with top executives in large multinational corporations across the globe, together with insights gained from other top leaders in the professional communications field, to deliver focused and intensive training for quickly (often in a single session) improving an individual’s ability to present and speak in public.
In courses and course books I have personally prepared and written during my career in education, students have enjoyed learning exercises and output/discussion activities that improve both their understanding and performance in the area of public speaking. A recent highlight of this work has been the “D8” system, which I developed to increase trainees’ awareness of available options for handling difficult questions. This system was featured prominently in the commercially available course book, Dynamic Presentations, published by Cambridge University Press in 2011.
In addition to these qualifications and training, I am personally a very experienced international public speaker, having given numerous winning sales presentations while managing a school in Istanbul, Turkey, as well as having presented at major international conferences in several countries, most recently in Stuttgart, Germany in 2012.
I am currently developing a package of PowerPoint based teaching activities for purchase by trainers who are seeking new ways to invigorate their training sessions while providing targeted and lively lessons during individual and group learning settings. I presented this work to a standing-room-only audience in Stuttgart last year.
The training I provide is readily adaptable to assist both native speakers of English and also individuals whose first language is other than English.
