I love working in an educational setting and helping my clients learn. I have tutored in a variety of settings, from special education classrooms to volunteer tutoring in Tucson, Arizona, to work as a learning coach in a tutoring center, doing intensive tutoring for five months with kids in an orphanage in Venezuela, working for a tutoring agency in Tucson, Arizona, and now tutoring with WyzAnt. In all of these diverse environment, my favorite moment in the tutoring relationship is when the student all of a sudden understands a difficult topic and his or her face instantly brightens. It's the almost literal light bulb turning on, and it gives me so much contentment to be a part of that process.
I enjoy using my creativity to present the material in a way that keeps students' attention and makes more sense to them than the conventional explanations. My goal when I tutor is that the student not only successfully complete whatever assignment, or pass whatever test, but that they truly understand the material at a depth where it can be applied to other areas of learning and form a strong foundation for later learning.
Helping give my clients confidence and encouragement in their academic endeavors by having a positive and patient attitude makes all the difference in being a great tutor. Confidence is key in the educational arena, and I love helping to empower my students to do what they dream of doing, and to have the full range of skills and knowledge to get there.
When I'm not tutoring, you might find me studying counseling theory for the graduate program I am currently enrolled in, exploring Portland with my husband, trying to create a garden, going on a bike ride, learning guitar, hiking, picnicking, baking, or dreaming up a plan for an adventure to a foreign country!
